The first thing I thought when I read it in the news this morning was
'I wonder why type of camera it was..'
the second was
'i wonder if the camera still works..'
That doesn't speak very highly for me.:) |

Yeah, I would imagine that the memory card would survive the fall. I wonder what's on it?

Probably not much, I'd guess he passed out when he realised that he had no chute... |

That's what I was thinking (it was a suicide). It wouldn't be my choice because I don't do well with planes ... but if I could pass on taking some great pics, I guess that would be a plus.

As he fell to his death, he looked calm and didn't flail, Rawlins said. He said the videographer from the plane saw Carafello's camera flash go off repeatedly and he appeared to be taking pictures of himself.
Strangeness cubed...

Wow ..... as I read it I got a picture of a very interesting man. Based on so little information it is hard for me to come to a conclusion about his psychological state though (I am a 3rd year psychology PhD student).
What a HORRIBLE way to die!

Geeze, not the way I would choose to go at all. Now, mauled by hungry bears, that is for me, or as part of a tv show, become famous. Knowing my luck I will be the only person to ever succeed at living forever and I will have no one to show my photos to. |

I'm absolutely amazed that something like this could possibly happen. I'm in no way an experenced skydiver, but I did start the Accelerated Free Fall training course, and have jumped with no tandem.
There are about 14 steps that one has to take before ever getting on a plane with the intent of jumping. On top of that, there are redundancies built into the system. At any reputable facility it is required to have someone else ALSO check your flaps, rigging, etc. I can't believe that anyone would allow this guy into the back of the plain with no chute, and I can guarantee you he didn't just forget. That's impossible.
I'm also trying to figure out how he was taking pictures of himself? The camera is mounted to a helmet, and it doesn't easily come off. Even if it did, you can't hold it in front of you, ala drunken cell phone pictures at the club, and just start snapping pictures. You are falling at 120 mph!
This smells very fishy to me, and there are probably a lot of details that aren't out yet.
I guess I should probably be discussing this at dropzone.com! Sorry to hijack. |

Well according to the story he DID NOT have the intent of jumping, he just said he wanted to ride along and take pictures. |

He was allowed IN the plane to take pictures FROM the plane; he wasn't a "skydiver". So the camera would be an ordinary camera, not a helmet cam. I can't comment as to whether it's unusual to allow a passenger along to shoot pics from the plane; you'd know that better than I...

Ahhhh. That makes more sense! I read the first story and it was certainly written as if the guy just jumped like the other jumpers, and just forgot to put on a chute.
I still don't know if I can buy him hanging onto that camera at 120, and if he did, he wouldn't be in a stable body position and woud be spinning and flipping all over the place. Anyway... sad story either eway. |
