I just got the rebel and it does not have a spot meter function (which was my old way of adjusting to light conditions) I leave in 2 days for a trip and I can't figure out how to do efficiently manage light with the rebel. I do understand the exposure lock a bit, but without the LCD (which also always used) I can't really tell if the shot is going to look way I want it to, I need help !!!
Thanks

I've only had mine a while, but the boxes in the view finder will light if the camera is using them for its adjustments in automatic mode. In manual mode, which I use, you can set which ones you want to use and lock them down. Then When I depress the shutter half way down, it shows me the reading and settings in the bottom of the viewfinder. Not a picture, but that̢۪s where you need to know the characteristics of what will happen with an F-Stop and Shutter setting. When all else fails, bracket. hahahaha

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. I'm still learning the camera myself.

i think she means - she doesnt know what the camera using for a midtone
metered light is from what?

the options depend on what mode you plan to shoot in
in the manual it describes which of the 3 metering modes different shoot modes use.

i think you kind of have to get a feel for how the camera takes photos in different light situations - and adjust exposure from there.

you could meter on an object you want exposed properly - and lock the exposure reframe the shot and snap the photo...

hope that helps some,

I went out yesterday and took a lot of automatic mode shots, and I must say I was primarily very happy with them, I think I will just keep it simple while I am away and learn more later. Your site showed me I knew a lot more than I thought I did about the features. I think too, the * ael ( i think it is) is very similar to spot metering. So I am feeling much more confident today than I was yesterday : ). Thanks again!
