I am shooting for a very good friend of mine next week and would like some input.

She is a singer, R&B. Her personality is fun loving and quirky. She is always smiling. I want to do something DIFFERENT. Not just your typical headshot/portrait. We are doing it in studio as it is 2,000 degrees outside.

I would like to capture her personality and something related to the music in the photograph. Sitting in a field is SO overdone.

I can photoshop if need be, but would prefer not to have to do this...

Any ideas? I just need a shove in the right direction. Anyone have R&B singer photos to display??

First, move off Venus.

Second, maybe do something fairly informal. Let her have fun, keep the session free form. Maybe have a "prop box" sitting around, hats...assorted clothing what have you.

Hmmmm, but I like it here ;)

Free form... I like that idea. I would like to see some R&B singers and their photos to get an idea of what she is looking for (album cover wise).

"Classic" shots could be from other genres as well: Big-band, punk, 60's psychedelic, etc. With any/all set-ups, I'd suggest planning to shoot/post-process each set-up as a low-key and a high-key look, in addition to more normal lighting, and try Grayscale and Duotone modes in post ... that will give you maximum flexibility in finding a photo with the right "feel" to it.

Possibly, she has a certain flare for the dramatic (which I love). Where could I get my hands on an old mike?

Now that we got that out of the way, some suggestions:

- Photoshop her sitting in the middle of a field.
- Shoot her balancing her guitar on the tip of her nose.
- Close ups of her making goofy faces (see Jutilda's portfolio for inspiration)

I know - I'm no help. I do wish you luck and think you'll come up with some great stuff. ...now that you've been poked, that is. :)

Put R&B singer in a Google image search - you might get some ideas there.

Old mic - check on eBay.

Heyyyy, thanks! I worked for about 80 hours non-stop on those images (with small sleep spats inbetween) to get them ready in just 1 week :)

My head is still kind of spinning :)

left many comments - I hope I wasn't too brutal. Overall a great job on both shoots, IMHO.
