36 tens in just about a year and 41 favorites.
Interesting though, not every 10 is a favorite, but some that I scored lower are. hmmmm...

I usually score between 4 and 8. After they are all grouped by ranking I upgrade some and downgrade some. Usually each challenge I pick two 10s. |

Go to manage favorites then the statistically favorite images link on the left side. Would be nice to also see the statistics by year.
I gave out many more 10's in the first year of being here, then tapered off but I still do give them out. Not in each challenge though. |

I can't believe I've only given out four 10's, 2 of which were in Expert editing, out of 8360 votes. I had been holding out for nearly perfect pictures. Based on this thread I think I'll try to vote 10's on every challenge I vote in, voting a broader range of scores. I vote some 1 to 3's when the picture is really bad. I vote mostly 4-7.

OK, after changing my perception of what deserves high scores my first 100% voting challenge Masks has very different voting statistics. I more than doubled my past year's 10's by voting 5 tens in this challenge that I fully expect to be in the top 10. OK I also voted 1 picture a 3, 2 pictures a 4 and 4 pictures a 5.

I went to figure out how many 10s I voted from that link above.
I then realized that I voted the entire Rubber Ducky challenge all 10s... Needless to say I don't want to figure it out anymore. |

Often.
10 doesn't have to mean "perfect". It could be something you like above all else and/or something you connect with.
Eight people thought enough of this image to give you a 10. It's far from perfect, but it obviously moved some :) |

On my first run through I use keybard voting based on initial impact. Then after that I go through and adjust the images using the whole voting scale. If i gave everyone the 5-8 score range then I would have images in groups that I didn't feel they belong. I have been consistantly doing this since I got here so I'm consitant on my style. Now that I enter challenges I hate giving out 1 and 2s so I try to bump up the lower scorers since I know that they aren't going to ribbon anyways and by giving then a little praise they might feel excited and learn. I'm trying to now comment on every image but it is hard... some pictures I can ramble forever but others I can't find a thing to say.... |

No where does it say a 10 is PERFECT! |

I've cast over 26,000 votes so my 10's filled up the 100 limit of the page when checking my favs. I used the whole range when I started here but now rarely give less than a 3. For the most part I'm with those who use a modified curve for each challenge, giving out at least a few 10's each time.
Let face it, there is no money involved and certainly not professional status from how you score here. I look at it as a community of people who love photography and want to learn from each other. Encouraging each other helps. |

55 tens so far.....
I vote thru in a first pass: 5's to technically okay images that meet the challenge but don't "do it" for me. Images that seem a cut above get a 6 or 7 usually, and images that don't have some minimum amount of technical merit (poor focus, poor exposure, etc.), or those that seem to completely miss the challenge goal, or both, get a 4.
Then I go back thru the 6's and 7's and "expand the scale" on those up to 9 or 10--which means I just keep "up selecting" until I can narrow down and choose the best of the best (from my pov). This method allows me to pick out the big chunk of those I like, then interate thru them, re-voting up the ones I like better, and then again, etc.
Later, I go back and look at those that I gave a lower score to, as well, to reconsider (in case I was over harsh, or if I just see them differently).
I will infrequently give 1s or 2s to those that seem to be deliberately in search of the elusive brown ribbon, or sometimes if it seems they just shoehorned in a picture of the beer they were about to drink before the challenge closed....
I think to assume 10 means perfect is to limit the reward/encouragement aspect of the site--we are all learning, me with more to learn than most, so 10s are a way of saying "I thought this was among the BEST in this Challenge" and not "this image is perfect and without peer".

Two in 'masks'. 10 = Best of show and a little extra to help the photographer towards a ribbon. Actually, it's harder to get a 9 from me than a 10; 8 = Good, technically solid, photo.
I can't remember the last 1 I gave. Usual lowest I vote is a 3. I don't believe whips work and after all I'm not trying to hurt anyone. I think an honest critique does the most good, either way.

Yikes!!! Out of 40.000 votes I have only dished out 82 tens - nowhere near even half a percent!!!
I don't think that's right, considering the voting scale states 1=bad, 10=good ........ it does not say that 10=mind-blowing, once in a lifetime, totally amazing photo!
I shall try to be a little more generous. |

I suppose I'm pretty singy with 10s, too. Don't know how many I've given, but very few for sure. It really has to knock my socks off. 10 seems to me should mean it's "perfect", in that all techs are excellent, the story is clear and impactful, emotions are stirred..really extra SPECIAL. Several 8s, a few 9s, but very few 10s.
Flip side, if it's just O.K. = 5. Less than O.K., but still see a little effort = 4.
Plain old poor, no effort, little skill = 3.
I've only given a couple of 2s, mainly for obvious B.S. or attempt to shock with no redeeming value or quality. 1s should be reserved for contempt, but I don't think I've ever given one. Probably won't.

I haven't scored a single picture with a ten yet, lots of 9's, but never a 10. Like bvy i am saving that score for a picture/s which touch me deep inside and make me feel something special even if it is not perfect technically (although it should be close).
Even so, when i am voting the most important for me is not the number of 10's I give, the most important thing is to be coherent with my voting.

In my personal scoring world, top-of-the-scale is 9 basically. 10 is off the charts. A picture has to REALLY resonate with me to get a 10. I hand them out rarely, though I'm always thrilled when I'm moved to do so.

I hope those of you who never give out 10's never whine about your scores in the scores threads. If we were all like you and never gave out 10's the scores would be a lot lower than they are now.

This is the exact way I vote as well.
I give out a 10 in most challenges. Some challenges I have 3-4 9's and I can't clearly pick out my favorite of the bunch and therefore leave them all at 9.

I give out a 10 on nearly every challenge (but not all of them). I give a one on about half the challenges. I treat each challenge as an independent entity, and score on a curve. I have many images I've given tens to that I haven't faved, and others I faved that I didn't give a 10 to. Go figure. Usually I fave images because I want to look at them later for one reason or another. |
