----original message----
I've looked through the forums and have seen a couple topics about cheap lens recommendations. None of the topics really conformed to what I'm asking though.

I bought the Canon 50mm f/1.8 probably 7-8 months ago and love it. I think I spent a total of $72 after shipping. The general consensus of lenses is that you get what you pay for. As far as I'm concerned the performance of the 50mm is stellar for the price.

With the vast array of equipment in the DPC user base, I was wondering if anyone knows of other lenses that have such a price/performance ratio comparable to the 50mm..? Are there any? Does anyone disagree with my rating of this lens?

I think you will get very little disagreement that the performance of the 50/1.8 *for the dollar* is outstanding. There are other great values in Canon lenses and third-party lenses. A few of the ones I'm aware of:

- Canon 35/2
- Canon 85/1.8
- Tamron 28-75/2.8
- Canon 17-40/4 L
- Canon 200/2.8 L

There are a number of others.

Agree re the 50mm f1.8 - oustanding lens for the price

Assuming the Tokina 11-16 2.8 lives up to its early hype... KR absolutely loved it (and he usually hates on 3rd party lenses), and the photozone test demonstrates better resolution characteristics than any APS-C ultrawide on the market.

All this for $569 at B&H. Sounds like a winner to me... I can't wait to test drive one!

outside of the kit lenses from canon, and the 50mm 1.8 - the 2nd place winner is the 17-40 f:4L pretty much tied with the 17-85 canon ef...

that's just dpc users. the 50mm 1.8 II is by far the most owned lens ;}

I would HIGHLY suggest adding the following inexpensive bit of magic:
Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro for Canon

I'd add the Tokina 10-17mm. Gives you a fisheye and ultra-wide angle in the same lens, for under $500. Very sharp lens!
