I am really glad this discussion came up. I have a Tamron lens that I primarily use to shoot...everything! I want to get a second one since this one really needs some cleaning probably after YEARS of use. I love my Tamron for portraits, but also wonder if I should get a Canon L Series lens. I do a lot of kids and babies, so I want something fast. At the same time...I want to move to a 40D or 5D. I might wait to make the camera change since I also want a new iMac. Sooo..my question what would you suggest for portraits in studio? 70-200 4.0L seems so long to me, but does it work in studio?

One of the most popular portrait lenses (especially on full frame) is the Canon 85mm f/1.8, so the length isn't really a problem, but f/4 is a little slow. The 50mm you already have is great for portraits. I usually reach for that lens or the Tamron 28-75. |

The 70-200 f4 L is a great lens, this shot has not had any processing, wether it is suitable for studio work I dont know. As scalvert mentioned the 85mm f1.8 would be a good choice.
