Hi, I'm considering Canon Xsi. Will Canon prime lenses 50mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 work with Xsi, i.e., auto focus and not just manual focus? Thanks.

Yes, absolutely. You can't go wrong with either lens. |

I'll second that, but you mention the 50 1.4, if that is within your budget then I would wholehearted recommend that lens.. its a beaut!! (better build than the common 50mm 1.8 mkII). |

I agree. The f/1.8 version can certainly produce excellent images, but focusing is noisy and slow. |

I have the 50mm 1.4 and would never sell it. |

Compared to the kit lens the 50 1.8 is better, but that's the only comparo it wins. It suffers from bad CA, and it's not all that sharp wide open (and why by a 1.8 lens you can't shoot at 1.8?). The slow noisy focus has already been mentioned.
The 28 1.8, 50 1.4, 85 1.8 are all excellent lenses. I've heard good things about the 35 F2 but it's not USM focus so it's probably loud and slow. The 135 2.8 SF (Soft focus) is super sharp and affordable, but it's focus is slow and noisy. Slow isn't a problem for static subjects, but forget doing much action photography.

FWIW, I have not noticed any great focussing speed advantage to any of Canon's 50mm lenses. They all seem to be much of a muchness to me.

I have the Xsi and the 50mm 1.8 and am very happy with the way they work. I have not noticed any real problems with it at 1.8 other then making sure what I want in focus is. Maybe on a full frame it may have some problems wide open but on a cropped sensor it works just fine. |
