I'm interested in picking up some White Lightning strobes, and was curious if anyone here has bought anything from Paul C Buff and had it shipped to Canada. I'm curious what the shipping and duty costs would be for 2 strobes.

I'm a fan of Alien Bees, but I'm not a Canadian so can't really help.... but your question made me wonder...
Can any shipper just charge what they want to ship you guys stuff or is there some chart that says if I buy something of xxxx value the import duty will be xxx? I mean, when I want to know what shipping from NY to FLA is, I check FedEx and they tell me. Do you guys have something similar to check duty costs? Its all a strange system to me.

Normally there is no duty to pay on such items. You will be called upon to pay the shipping costs, the PST & GST. You could always send an email or call the 1-800 number to find out what the shipping costs would be, and inquire as to whether or not the items are being shipped through a "Broker", as the "Brokerage fees" can be something to behold.
Hope this helps.

depends on your province for taxes but brokerage will be something stupid
last items i got (not from AB) were 3% but has been as high as 7$
best thing to do is have them ship to a temp place just under the border & pick them up!
then you are just paying taxes & gas

I've had stuff shipped from them.. and it's the same as shipping from the stats in General... you'll have a brokerage fee and they'll make you pay GST/PST based on what it's worth (government will always find a way to get theirs)

No PST, just GST. The shipper -- UPS I believe -- will charge you a brokerage fee for handling the GST payment for you. If I remember correctly, it will be on the order of seven or eight bucks. |

I had 2 AB800's shipped to Ontario. I called up the company to place the order and they shipped it UPS Expedited, which includes the brokerage fee. Anything shipped using UPS Ground will normally have a brokerage fee of about $40 added on - it's only stuff sent USPS and Canada Post which comes in with the $8 fee. Don't forget that you'll have to pay GST/PST when you collect, but not duty - photo equipment is duty free.
This article explains it. |

| I can't remember exactly - I think it was around $60-70, but that includes the brokerage fee as I mentioned. |

It is ridiculously expensive to buy anything from AB because of the freaking brokerage fees.
I just bough one of the SyberSync receivers today, they'll need to find a more economical way to ship their products, I've just paid 43.25 Brokerage and Taxes fees for this order.
Product: 69.95
Shipping: 13.82
Brok: 31.88
Tax: 9.89
Total payment: 127
If they think paying 45.64 shipping and brokerage for 70$ item is fair, well they need to think again, this raised the total cost to 127 Dollar .. common .. I can pay bit more and get myself a Pocket Wizard for this price.
Not happy. Not happy Not happy.
Next time I'll need to buy something .. I'll check if they still using the UPS, if yes, I'll dump all the Sybersyncs on E-bay and buy a PcketWizard .. at least I'll pay the price difference for quality and not for freaking UPS.

I bought an AB400, softbox and stand when I had gone down to AZ. As ralph suggested it may be better if you can ship to somewhere in the US and then move it across the border. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some other AB stuff but I'm holding off to see if I make another trip across the border first and bring it back myself. I wont have any of that shipped to me here just because of the brokerage fees, IMO they are pathetic but apparently there is a shipping method on their site to cut the costs on those fees but I haven't really had the time to look into it yet.
