as much as i enjoy the challenges, i think sometimes this site would be better off if there were no challenges and we just had the side challenges where everyone commented, taught and learned

Ahhh, regarding the actual title part of the post - yes, I can see that.

I guess since that part is pertaining to a challenge still in voting, this discussion can be picked up tomorrow after rollover. :-)

No problem with that, but this has been blown out of all proportion and gotten a bit ugly, please rememember my original post which said, "I currently have a submission in the boats challenge, and have had a couple of comments saying sort of 'is it a boat?' etc."

Most of the comments are very positive. And the ones that didn't recognise a boat aren't exactly scathing either...

HI rob_smith,
I think I know where you're coming from. I've noticed quite a few rude/sarcastic remarks and comments made by people. Bottom line, we're on here to share our work and learn from each other. I have been a photographer for over 11 yrs now and, altough I still feel the need to learn more every day, others on here tend to leave unhelpful comments on this site compared to other sites. "Cyberbulling" should be on of the prohibiting rules in my opinion.

Thanks
CJ

From the comments, the title seems to have had a significant effect on how viewers looked at this one ...

Yah, no kidding. And I have had plenty of entries where the title made a real difference. Of course, I've had plenty where I shot myself in the foot while titling as well :-)

What can I say? I'm just a titlin' fool...

Those places are a dime a dozen in the internets.

Thanks Rob and Robert for The Cartier-Bresson thread It really is a perfect little( 4 page ) thread, thanks for sharing it. I got a new favorite quote out of it "Depth of feeling is more important than depth of feild" Imogen Cunningham

What does this have to do with the price of beans in Bangladesh?

I have put what it is in the title, if you are unsure people, google it.

It was similar for this one:

"i wouldnt consider this a camera" (sorry photoqueen not picking on you)

It's obvious to me and many others that it is a camera, who doesn't know what a CCTV/security camera looks like?

Should I start to make my challenge entries blatantly obvious?

I';m not sure what it is, but the two entries I have in now are getting similar responses. Apparently we need a basic class on composition around here. Many commenters seem to not evaluate the image presented but rather preach the commenter's opinion on photography in general..i'm not saying that well at all so forgive me. Perhaps a better explanation might be they are in a small box and when presented with an image that is even slightly beyond their box (knowledge of composition, etc) they can only think of how it might be changed to fit into the box, rather than trying to get themselves beyond their own little box and grow their knowledge.
'appears to be tilted' is one example - if it's a horizon then perhaps that is a valid comment, but if something is 30 degrees off plumb one should ask why the photog did that? Is there a reason perhaps? What does he want me to see that I'm not seeing? A comment of 'i don't like the tilt' is fine of course - you are entitled to your opinon (however wrong it might be :P )

That's hysterical! I hadn't seen it before, but the thought had occurred to me that even Ansel Adams would get low voted and heavily criticized on DPC. Awesome experiment!
