I like to shoot a wide wide range of topics. I currently own the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G lens. I like it but, it could be better. I've noticed problems with focus at times, and it is slower than I would like.

My three most preferred focal lengths are <24mm, 70mm, and >200mm. I plan to get the Sigma 20mm f/1.8 lens first. This will take care of the <24mm-ish slot and is nice and bright. However I am wondering if this is a mistake...

Before I started looking at lenses my brother, a former photographer some 20 years ago, told me I wanted prime lenses. Some things on the internet suggested that too. Low distortion, razor-sharp images, lighter, etc.

Then at some point I heard that primes are going out of fashion in favor of the new line of zooms coming from Canon and Nikon, which provide the benefits of primes with the flexible focal length of zooms. However I did learn that not all zooms are worth their weight in dirt.

So what should I buy? I wish to cover something around 10-20mm, 50-80mm, and then 130-300mm. I would prefer zooms however I would prefer f/2.8 which I know is very expensive on zooms.

It would be nice to have a site like DPReview which covered only lenses. Since they are the most important part of an SLR I really expected their lenses reviews to cover more than 9 models.

Thanks much and I know you are all sick of lens questions and I am sorry but I really need to know!

For Nikkor lens check here:

Lens Evals

I have never been sorry when I purchased good Nikon glass. I can't say the same for third party glass. I have been through a number of Sigma and Tamrons and have slowly sold them and bought Nikon. If I had it to do over again I would buy just one piece of glass at a time and and always good glass, use the heck out of it to learn it before going to the next. If you are willing to buy DX glass (for cropped sensor like the D300) then you might consider the Nikon 12-24. It is only F4 but constant and built well and fast focus speeds. The 70-200 VR or the 80-200 f2.8's are great glass (although pricey) to fill the longer end. I still have not settled on a middle range but with the new lenses out for the D3 they may have settled that issue with the 24-70.

Good luck in your serch.

I think your links are a bit muffled mate. Not sure which url you are referring me to, since one seems to be Canon only, and another a dating site for midgets, I'm guessing it is the slr gear page?

Thanks much, I forgot about that site and have bookmarked it, again. I swear something keeps eating my bookmarks.

F4 is a bit slow for my desire, especially for being a wide-lens. I like shooting sun rises and stars and even at f/3.5 I am feeling the major hurt for light.

Stabs you in the lens, there take that you you fiend!

---

I would prefer to stick with only Nikkor lenses however until Nikon can get lenses out that match some of the third party companies I know I will be unable to do that. Like that Sigma, f/1.8, the widest Nikkor to share that is the 50mm which is anything but wide.

Thanks again for the help guys!
