Yes, not being further away surely warrants being attacked....WHILE YOU'RE PUTTING YOUR EQUIPMENT AWAY!!!!!

Wow.

Another idiot cop who should be put through psychological tests to see if he's fit to carry a gun. But of course he'll be cleared and the brotherhood will once again have swept another ugly police story under the rug. Pityful to say the least.

Another idiot photographer who should learn to keep his mouth shut and not BAIT uptight men with guns could be said as well.

I know this isn't going to be a popular opinion, but if you listen to what the photographer was saying, he kept going back after the cop too. "Now was that to much to ask? What's your name and badge number, You gonna hit me?"

I don't trust police officers any more than I do anyone else, probably less, because they've been taught to be agressive, but to be a good cop they have to be. Now I am not saying that the cop was in the right but he certainly wasn't the only idiot on the street.

I'm really not defending What the cop did, and more importantly when he did it. That being said, you've got a situation with OPEN GUNFIRE. That photographer gets shot, and who's fault is it? The cops for not making him move.

1. We don't see the first time the officer told him to move. How much time elapsed between then and what we see on the video?

2. Was it REALLY necessary for the photographer to be such a smart A$$? "see, was that so hard? Was that so hard?" I would say yes. I'm being shot at right now. It's a little hard for me to give a rats behind where you go, other than in the line of fire.

The photographer KNOWS he can't walk into the middle of a gunfight, and he did it anyway. He was told to move for his own safety, and he refused. He was told where to go, and then he just HAD to be a little punk about it. And the AFTER he refuses to leave the area, and AFTER he shoots his mouth off, he wants to just throw his stuff in the van right quick?

This is why photographers have such a bad name!! You can't just go wherever, and do whatever you want because you've got a camera on your shoulder.

I agree with the two above posts. Also of note I highly doubt we got to see the full tape. Who knows how long that photographer was standing there bugging the cops. This is that news stations photographer we are talking about of course they are going to make sure that the bad side of the cop is all they show on the news.....

This is not only a paradoxon, but the only uptight man in the vid was the one with the camera.

Yeah but in general press and paparazzi photographers dont strike me as artists... I mean they don't strive for image quality they just want to capture people (usually at their worst....) when said people just want some privacy...

of course I'm not a big cop lover either... damn my lead foot....

sorry patrick_r, but I take offense to that. Being a photojournalist is INCREDIBLY competitive, challenging, etc. And you ALWAYS have to step your game up to compete. It is hard, it is work, it is the furthest thing from easy. I am currently the photo editor for the second newspaper I have been a staffer for, not to mention all of my freelance gigs. Trust me, I, and all other photojournalists, strive for image quality. If we didn't, our butts would be out the door to make room for the next guy. Furthermore, keep in mind that we dont always care to be put in the situations that we are. I have been yelled at, spit at, threatened, had stuff thrown at me, etc. Is that part fun? NO.

Recently, I had to be in a court room photographing a case w/ a sex offender involved. It was a place I would definately rather not be. His family stood by him, and I definately got some uncomfortable remarks from them. The whole situation was uncomfortable. At the end though, his victim came and thanked me for being there, for making sure the victim's story was told.

The point is is that we are there to do a service. One way or another. I guess the other option is always a state run newspaper *shutters*. Take your pick between the two I guess, but keep in mind, we are just trying to do our jobs just like the police (you think that they would rather not be in that situation too?), and make sure people can be informed IF THEY CHOOSE TO BE.

Bad Cop! NO Doughnut!

Apparently Nerves are a little frazzled at 3am on both sides. Without generalizations or blame, it just seems to me like the unfortunate meeting of two people having a bad day.. Nothing more, nothing less.....Hopefully both will get an earful from their superiors.

I have no doubt this will be the case... I'm glad my camera doesn't cost 50k lol! He was freaking out!

Understood. But...

If you cannot expect a cop to have the discipline to not respond with violence to a person heckling him, even under duress or stress, then i'm afraid we have a problem with our police forces. I see this all too many times everywhere lately and it's becoming ridiculous to see case after case get dismissed or just not followed through beyond a 1 day paid suspension for the cops involved. Look at the RCMP here in Canada using tasers on a screaming man in an airport terminal, he died from that taser. Why even use it on an unarmed man is beyond common sense when you see 5 or 6 cops surrounding him. Why not tackle him down and cuff him instead?

I like how once the camera man says his camera is worth 50k the cops stops taking him into custody.

I don't remember the particulars of this story but unless he is buck naked he could be armed but just hiding a knife... I mean even a pen can be used as a weapon! By using the tazer they can mantain a safe distance and not risk their lives in the process. It was awful that someone died from this but it was more of a freak accident. These tazers aren't killers I mean they shock each other with these things for a laugh. plenty of videos on this.

and btw don't scream in an airport lol... not in todays times...

One thing I would like to note is that there is no proof of the photographer getting told to get back to the staging area where is that part of the tape? I doubt the newscast wanted to show it
