what would you get, whether it be brand new or second hand.
I have a Canon XTI 400d and lens , so would have to be a Canon again, so would want a body only,
Any suggestions??

If you are for sure going to use the money for a body then a 40D new. You could consider a 30D and some more glass as another option but I think the 40D is worth the upgrade if you are dead set on just a camera body. |

Canon 40D! I upgraded from the 350XT and love the larger body, controls, top display, and the Live View is a great feature - great for macro shots.

If you can spare a bit more go for the combo kit. The 40D and the 28-135 IS together are $1129 at Adorama because of the Canon $200 instant rebate. The lens itself normally costs over $400 so this is a sweet deal. I just got the 40D today and so far am ecstatic! :P

Get a used 20D for 450ish and spend the rest on a sexy lens. |

I think you do VERY well with the equipment that you have.
It is really up to you. You have excellent technique and remember, it's not the camera, it's the photographer.
HOWEVER, you will not be disappointed with the 40D IF that is the way you choose to go :) hehe
Ultimately, it's your decision. If you want it, get it. |

look into the canon 10-500 2.8L, with these new rebates, you may get quite a deal |

Anyway it is true a camera will not make the photographer, however it is like a ceiling. The higher it is, the higher you can stand, but you still need to build your steps. |

Canon 40D - it's an outstanding camera and with the rebate on it now it's $939 at B&H. You could sell off your current camera and get a new lens or flash also.
The photographer needs the idea, the vision, etc to make a photography. But gear matters. Every top photog uses the best gear. If the gear limits your ability to get the image then you need better gear. Be that focus speed, low light useability, dynamic range, ergonomics, etc. Hey, the faster you can access the settings the less chance you'll miss a shot. I may never be Buissink or Yervant, but if I miss an image because my lens won't focus or my camera can't shoot ISO3200 well enough - that's something I can fix!

Would my glass wear that I have right now, work well with the 40d, or am i looking at having to buy new glass again? |

No. If you're looking for a backup, go for a used 20D or something, like I suggested earlier. If you just want to upgrade... don't bother. Your money will be significantly better spent on lenses and lighting. |

I am very happy with the lens's i have right now, I dont think at the moment that I need to get anymore lens. As for studio lights etc, when I am in the studio, I use one light and that is for light painting, so lighting is not important to me as it is to most studi set ups.
I am nto looking for a back up, the 400d will be the back up if anything |

So essentially, you just want a newer, more awesome camera? Fair enough, but its definitely not the course of action that I would recommend.
Upgrading your lenses will always give more benefit that upgrading your (relatively new) camera. You don't have anything faster than 2.8... a couple fast primes would be a perfect addition. Do you ever use the flash on your camera? An external unit would be a huge benefit if you do...
Anyways, thats just my opinion, but you've got a decent camera already so unless there is a specific feature that you're looking to upgrade for, you should be spending your $$ on lenses, lighting, support, etc.

The glass you have now would work fine, but if got a 40D for 939 and sold your 400 for $400 (no idea on what they're going for used, might be worth more) you' have $450-500 left over of your $1000. You could get a fast prime or two (50 1.4, 85 1.8 are both good choices) or a good/fast tele like the 70-200 F4 (used for $500 or so) or teh 580EX2 flash is $400 or so and I think there's a rebate on them now too.
For studio lights consider paterson interfit stellar lights. A pair of 300ws units with stands and all is $500 or so from B&H. Excellent lights and a great value.

Guilt only lasts a few days, a new camera last a lot longer. :) |
