Anyone else with this lens want to get me more excited?

I can tell you that the first time I really used that lens, my "keep" ratio went up tremendously and there were many shots that would have been perfectly fine without any editing at all. Out of about 150 shots, I don't think there was even one shot where the technical qualities were bad. A few with eyes closed, bad expressions, etc...but nothing the fault of camera or lens. The clarity was awesome!
I was amazed at the difference in my shots with that lens and the 40d vs. my 10d and cheaper lenses. You will not be sorry!

My wife, prozac, just bought this lens as well. So far, I've used it MUCH more than she has :)
I'm a big fan. I had forgotten what 17mm looked like. My shortest lens is 24mm. On a more technical note, the lens is very sharp and the IS seems to work very well. It's light, and is built as well as a plastic lens can be built (as far as I can tell, anyway).
although ... $50.00 extra for the hood is a bold insult for a $1000.00 lens

You got that right! I can't believe it doesn't come with the damn hood. Especially on a wide angle lens where they know you're going to be shooting primarily outdoors.
WTF Canon? |

check on ebay for a chinese hood , about $10 plus a few bucks shipping. Got mine that way it's fine. I rarely use hoods anyway, but sometimes you need them. Most of my lenses are 2.8 or better and all the hoods are friggen huge so I keep them in a pile all their own.
My keeper rate went way up with teh IS too. THis is the lens that sold me on IS..but my last few lenses have not had IS. My more recent is the 24-70 2.8, mostly for backup and studio use so IS isn't all that necessary, but I do like this lens alot...I may have to relearn how to hold steady. With the 17-55 1/10 second shots are an everyday expectation!

That's what I wanted to hear. This lens will be used for weddings and other indoor events. Of course, I'll use it for landscapes and outdoor portraits as well, but don't need the IS for that.
What do I search for on ebay?
What about this hood from Amazon?

I can't contribute to this discussion other than asking why the heck do they make the petal shaped lens hoods rather than full round coverage? It does no good when the sun (or street lights) is not directly above, since it locks in place vertical and you can't rotate it (at least not on my Sigma 18-200). I can't rotate the CPF with the hood on anyway.

The idea of a hood is to block unwanted light entering the front element at certain angles that might cause flare - artsy flare is fine, but the contrast killing kind sucks big time. The cut aways allow a larger hood (depth) than you could otherwise use because you'll get vignetting with a fully round hood at wider focal lengths.
