I was in Vegas once......passing through on a cross-country drive.
The night photography of the glitterati is spectacular, and there is great opportunities within a short drive for desert photography.
Death Valley and Rhyolite are something like 100 miles away.
I dunno if I could make it, but if there's any way that flights get cheap, maybe.....

I'm pretty sure this has been suggested before and I think that Vegas was even the location mentioned then, too. Not trying to be negative, just throwing this out there.
I couldn't find the thread when I did a quick search, but I'm pretty sure it's there. I think that the primary complaint last time around was that Vegas is way in the western corner of the US - a far hike away from the East Coast and Europe crowds who might like to come. (Yes, I realize there are DPCers out West, too.)

Geeeeshh you lot, you are all a bunch of naysayers!
Where ever you go you are going to have to travel, there is such a thing as hiring a mini bus and split the cost of that and it works out to be like 10 bucks a person. The hotel rooms have all ready been discounted, you can get a nice hotel for about 40-50 a night and if you share that room with 3 people you are looking at maybe 15 bucks a night. air fares are so cheap these days.
there is so much to photograph in Vegas and the surronding areas.
Maybe you should think about just doing a West Coast GTG and a North and South and East one , that may be the answer

and also remember, you are there to photograph, not stay in your luxury hotel room all night and day. So it doesnt exactly have to be top of the range, you are only going to be sleeping there. So a break down of costs"
Hotel room= 20 a night is shared with 2-3 people
MIni Bus - 10 a day
Food - 10-15 a day, brunches work well there
Airflight- say at most 200
so if it is planned in advanced, you can even get better deals

Found the last convention thread: DPChallenge Convention
And here's two threads on photo ops in/near Vegas:
Las Vegas
Vegas & Surrounding
As is stated in the old thread, this is a huge undertaking and would require someone (likely several people/a committee) to plan, organize, book rooms, etc. If folks will step up and take it on, wonderful - a DPC convention would be a blast, for sure! But it can't turn into a half-baked boondoggle.
Personally, I'm still not sold on Vegas. But if people are serious about this, perhaps we could choose four or five possible locations and then put a poll on the front page to see where "the people" think is best.
And JulietNN, I think you might be overly optimistic in your estimate. I tend to think it would look more like this:
Hotel - $50/night if shared with 2-3 others
Food - $40/day (assuming free breakfast at a hotel, light lunch, decent dinner, water all day for hydration)
Airfare - I have no real info on this, but $200 sounds too good to be true. I'd have guessed twice that.
All in all, I find it hard to believe that this could be done for much less than say $800 per person. Which isn't necessarily a bad price (?), and even if I'm over-estimating, better than than under-estimating.

hmm you might be right, but i tend to go for good deals.
The NY trip was 6 nights in a hotel and round trip airfare costing $486 (inculded Frid and Sat stay)
I spent $200 on taxis, food, drinks, metro card, bus pass and City Pass.
so basically a weeks vacation in New York cost me 700 dollars.
I just looked up an airfare for you from NY to Las Vegas $140 return trip for next week, they are constantly running specials for hotels. The Sahara (3 star hotel) right now is running at $36 dollars a night, a 4 star hotel Monte Carlo is at 69 dollars a night.

Seems to me a tela-conference could be held in several locations at the same time. Sure some may be enjoying a Fosters at midnight , whatever Ale̢۪s you in Europe , and for some a noontime martini in New York, and a few of us with Bloody Mary̢۪s nursing a hangover in Vegas. |
