We (wife, daughter, and myself) are making an impromptu 3.5-day trip to SLC - probably this Friday through Monday. I've never been there. Any suggestions on things we absolutely must see while there? Or, anyone who lives in the area, any hints on things that might be happening this weekend that might be fun? We'll probably tour the temple and the Olympic village. Beyond that....? Is there snow in the mountains yet? Any must-see photo ops?
Thanks for any insights! :) |

Scott, it's been snowing pretty heavily here this past few days. There will be some dramatic mountain scenery (also skiers and snowboarders) and the two places you mentioned are quite photogenic. I wouldn't miss either of them. If you want to email me, I'll be glad to give a mini tour on the weekend - I think there's lots to shoot. |

Hey David, Long time no see. Scott, I totally agree with David about those two places being great photo ops. It has been snowing all day and there will be quite a bit of snow up in the mountains. Just be careful driving while your here. It doesn't seem people realize yet there is snow (there was 73 accidents today around Salt Lake area.)
Little and Big Cottonwood canyon are just a stones throw away from Salt Lake. There are some great places up there. Here is a great website that shows everything that is going on in Salt Lake this weekend- Fun in Salt Lake

Hi Scott. Did you get some good SLC photos? I'm a lot homesick and would love to see them!
Thanks,
Jo Ann

Hey Scott, Little Cottonwood Canyon is very pretty. If you go to the west side of the valley, you can see the Bingham Copper Mine--the largest human-made excavation in the world (and it's only $4 to get in there, and a visit to the Great Salt Lake is always interesting (for a few minutes). My "Seeking Forgiveness" shot was taken there. It's a good place to be at sunset. At sunrise, be east and look at the Oquirrh Mountains to the west--the alpenglow is amazing.
Temple Square is always interesting--but go at night when all the pretty lights are on! If you're Christian, you'll want to go to see 'The Christus' statue in the northern most visitor's center. |
