Would a d80 be a significant enough upgrade over a d50, or should I wait for a D300? Keep in mind that most mud puddles have more money than I do.
I really want to be able to trigger my flash off the camera. I have an sb600 and I don't want to spend $380 on an sb800 when I could toss that money in a better camera. |

If your really strapped for cash consider a D200. It's great camera and it's been coming down in price since the release of the D300. Just a suggestion though!:)

| I was looking at a comparison chart, but It was unclear to me what things I would get from a d200 over a 50? I think it will control the flash, but what other benefits would I see? |

You get more megapixels, but that only really matters if your going to be doing large prints of plan to be cropping a lot. You also get a faster frame rate, better iso control, much more functionality in its layout, etc, etc. I got mine for 900 at national camera exchange and it's a good step up from a D50 (my previous camera also).
Look here at DPreview, it'll give a side by side comparison to the D100 which is still better than the D50. here
Hope it helps

| Once the D90 comes out the D80 should be discounted. |

Here, but they're currently out of stock. The common name for these little guys is "ebay slave" so I'm guessing that would be a good place to look for em...
They're also known as "poverty wizards," derived from the fact that they're a cheap knockoff of the Pocket Wizard radio triggers.

| The only thing the D80 has on the D200 is the ML-L3 wireless remote. I have both cameras and got into my D200 used with grip and only 250 clicks for $1k usd. I would go with the D200. But the D80 is a great camera and I am keeping mine to convert for astrophotography. The main selling point of the D200 in my mind is the Magnesium weather sealed body. |

I will probably order that. I think that would suffice until I can upgrade. Never fails however that they are out just when I would like to buy one.
