I want to upgrade from my Cannon Powershot A40.
It is a good camera - but there are few limitations in it, as in all low end digital cameras.
I dont need an SLR as yet but a high end digi cam would be nice
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

How much money are you planning on spending?
What features do you definatly require on the camera?

Well lets see - how about $600 to $700.

hi, I just purchased a sony f717, about 2 or 3 weeks ago, and im extremely happy with it. Ive taken about 900 pictures. I bought it on circuitcity.com for 800 and then you get 150 back in mail in rebates. It came out to 650, right in your price range. I had to save up my money for quite a while in order to get this. Im only 14. Its just a great camera, especially for the price.

i just got the G3. its a fair but cheaper than the new G5, and as far as i know the only major differences in the G5 are that it is black and is 5MP instead of 4MP.

this is my first camera outside of a couple of $30 plastic instant cameras i might of had when i was a kid, but i have to say i really do think its a great camera. i did a fair bit of research before buying and all signs ended up pointing in the G3's direction. Besides it having a fully manual setting and all the great automatic settings, its things like the swivel out lcd screen, the hot shoe, the interchangeable lense, the extra long battery life and more that make it a stand out camera for the price, which has dropped significantly since the G5 came out.

i'm a really big fan of the swivel out lcd. i don't understand how people with fixed screens are ever able to take photos that are not at their own eye level from crouch to standing positions. I can get way down to the floor and still be in a comfortable crouch or reach up over my head (and the heads of the crowd in front of me) and always see exactly what i'm pointing at. works great on angles too, and you can even flip it around all the way to do self portraits.

i had considered the sony f717, and its not my intention to steer you away from it since brands don't mean much to me, but the memory stick issue was enough to keep me from looking too closely at it. since buying my camera, i have taken a closer look at the f717, and it does look to be a pretty sweet camera, so i'd say you've got some decent options in this range.

good luck.

I really like my Canon G5. I got it over the G3, just because I wanted a 5MP camera for large prints. I looked at the Sony F717, the Oly 5050 and the Nikon 5400 as well. I think you could just pick any one of those and do just fine. The biggest factor in my evaluation was to go to a brick and mortar store to handle the cameras and see how they felt. I liked the feel of the Canon G3/G5 body better, mostly because it feels more like holding an old 35mm rangefinder and I'm a film camera kind of guy. You may like something else.

Thnx guys - well i guess i will start eating potatoes for a couple of months until i can afford to buy a good camera.
But I still I havent made up my mind.
The G5 and the G3 are temting especially bcoz of the LCD .
And the SONY F717 looks so hard core. ;)
But what other choices do I have?
The thing is - with the A40 - it uses simple AA batteries - which cheap - I have 3 sets of NiMh batteries.
And the Compact flash cards are cheap aswell.
And im not earning anything yet coz im a student - still.
How much would I be able to sell my cannon for or will I be able to exchange it and pay a littel bit more ?
