As I submitted my Halloween challenge, I thought about the deadline as it pertained to me (east coaster) and someone on the west coast. Basically, I had until midnight to submit the photo, yet someone in California had to have theirs in by 9:00pm. Seing that holiday times are typically busy that seemed a bit unfair to my west coast colleagues. I was thinking that if the deadline was done at 3:00am EST, then the west coast would have the entire holiday to submit their photo and give all the user the chance to see more photos that may otherwise not have been submitted or better photos that may not otherwise had the oportunity to be post-processed.

For that matter, any speed challenge would benefit from the same idea.

But what about our friends in other lands that have totally different time zones? Is it fair to them to have a challenge start and end in the middle of their day? Something else to think about....

I don't believe that there is a simple solution. So I guess an arbitrary start and end time (est OR pst) may be the only way.

In Europe, they would start at 9:00am and it would end the following day at 9:00am. (minus an hour for UK)

The problem would arise for people in Australia and Asia though since the Holiday would just about be done before they find out about the cahllenge.

Personally, the way it is doesn't bother me since I am in the same timezone as DPC. It just seams unfair that some people have more time than others. Halloween came to mind since in essence, the holiday is 7:00pm to midnight. While I got 5 hours to capture something, others only had 2.

What if the rule for holiday challenges was that the photo had to be taken on that holiday in your time zone and submissions can be accepted the following day?

Or maybe, I am thinking too much again. ;)

The time frame is still 24 hours. Trick or treaters may only arrive between 7 and midnight (or abouts) on that day, but that does not mean you have to wait to take the picture then. The back to school speed challenge was done on a weekend, and yet people still managed to set up shots that captured the essence of the challenge. Halloween props had been around since the start of October, even early in some places, and like now Christmas is already flooding the shops.

At 9pm it would seem some have an early start, even though it's the same time and people are unlikely to take photographs at 9pm, but it just means that there is less chance for last minute before midnight shots at the other end of the scale.

I can fully understand how it could be seen as frustrating, but I dont think it would be possible to stagger deadlines.
