Hi All,
Can anyone suggest a really good general lens for the 40D
I have a 17-85 and I am not amazed with it .........distortion big time. The 17-55 in the UK is £550 + , which is expensive.
Can anoyone suggest an alternative or do I bite the bullet and get the 17-55
cheers
Tony

Depends on what you want and/or how picky you are. And your budget of course. I have the 17-55 and love it, but at times want more reach. IS is great for a lot of what I shoot (weddings). I also have a tamron 24-135 and canon 28-135 and like them both. The canon has IS and USM but I feel the tamron is sharper and better built. I got the tamron over the 17-85 IS a few years back and the 18-135 came with my 40D. I love the range of both/either, but not the speed with both being 3.5-5.6 lenses.
I have the 24-70 2.8 coming as it is slightly better suited to my purposes than the 24-105 IS, but it was a VERY hard choice to make. I suspect I'll get the 24-105 one day. I want/need a bit longer in the studio that the the 17-55 is giving me and plan to get a 5d2 if it ever comes out so I'll need FF capability one day.

| I'm on the verge of selling everything (save my 50mm prime) to raise funds for the 24-105 f4 L. The range will be perfect for me and the f4 I can live with, especially as it has IS. If you don't want to spend that much (you can get them for £550 on ebay) I hear the Canon 28-135mm IS, Tamron 24-135mm and Sigma 18-125mm are all quite acceptable lenses. |
