I was trying to take some star and moon photos the other night and while many turned out acceptable, they are, blurry. Not as in motion blur, but instead of sharp little dots of light, they are little blurs of light. I tried focusing several places in the infinity range and got the exact result. Now I know my lens, the Nikkor 18-200mm VR is not a super lens, however nothing close is blurred with the lens in normal light.

So my question is, how does a person focus on stars, which are not even visible through the viewfinder? Same for the moon, seems sometimes the autofocus can catch it, other times it just struggles and gives up.

Thanks again! :)

As long as the moon is fairly bright your AF should pick it up. Try center point only(or the Nikon equivalent). Use the edge of the moon to lock in your AF.

Stars??? not sure but i've usually just set my lens to infinity. NOte i've only used my wideangle when shooting scenes with stars.
