can someone give me a basic workflow for using Lightroom? I am a little confused because I am so used to bridge and i have a hard time pulling all my shots from the flash card into Lightroom, should I be putting them in a folder or what?

If you select File|Import or hit the Import button located in the lower left corner of the Library screen it will pop-up a dialog asking if you would like to import from you flash card. It will then give you a dialog that allows you to specify what folder to put the files in, or have it sort the photos by date.

My workflow...

1. Move files from my card to my storage directory manually in Windows. Sometimes I don't dump shots between shoots, so I can put them in directories as I see fit. I have a \DumpingGround directory where I dump my photos into directories such as "2008-05-15 DPChallenge" and "2008-05-14 Trip to Rome", etc. I select the relevant ones for each directory and then move them.

2. Then I open the Lightroom catalog I want to put them in -- I have a main catalog, one for processing old photo scans, and some others.

3. Import the photos from disk, keeping them in their current location.

Voila. That's what I do.

When dragging files into LR make sure that before you drag you are in library mode. Drag photos or folders in to the center and drop them. Let it configure the files and then click import when prompted. Make sure that when importing you import from their current location and you don't move them. Once files start showing up click on any one of them and then click the word develop to edit the picture.

I shoot RAW, so I've set Lightroom up to auto-import as soon as a card goes into the card reader. It makes a Library copy and saves the RAW to a file on my hard drive wherever I tell it to.

Once imported I move to Develop mode in LR. Here I look at each image and hit 1, 4 or 5 to rate my images as I sort through. Once all are sorted I view only those rated 1 - delete them. Then I veiw all rated 4 and decide if they stay or go. Lastly I view all rated 5, make adjustments and export the group as jpg. :)

Sorry, didn't see your question before. I export as jpg for immediate upload to my website. If I plan to do much editing I export those as pdf, but that's more the exception than the rule.
