I know nothing about todays P&S/Compact cameras. My plumber wants a decent P&S with wide angle capabilities (28mm?) to take before and after shots of bathrooms/kitchens. His wife also wants to take jewellery pics so a half decent macro would be a bonus. Anybody got suggestions? £400 ($800) MAX.
Thanks in advance peeps :) |

| I am very happy with my canon 860 IS, 28mm to 105mm, macro is awesome with 1cm focus and 4x magnification, 3 inch screen is also awesome. ISO is noisy above 800, but that is going to be the norm for a p&s. No shutter or aperture control is only minor down side ... about £180, check my portfolio for some pics |

| The 28mm Panasonic Lumix TZ4/TZ5 models are getting good reviews (I have one), and the new Lumix DMC-FX35 offers 25mm on wide angle end. |

I am having a blast with my new olympus stylus 850 sw. Its waterproof to 3 metres and can supposedly be dropped from 2 metres without damage (haven't tried that, not planning to).
It has 3 built-in macro modes, including one with LED lighting. |

For the listed budget, there is lots of choice. Any P&S will have a smaller sensor and not do as well with those indoor shots as an SLR will. If he will be using a tripod, that overcomes a lot of it, though. I have a Canon S5 IS that would be a good choice. It has a great macro mode, being able to focus with the lens actually touching an object. A Fujifilm S700 is also a decent choice for such purposes. The Fuji has a slightly wider angle lens than the Canon, so might be better for those tight kitchen and bathroom shots.

I have the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ3 and it's great wide and close up. The newer model the TZ5 has better stabilization compared to the TZ3
Some examples from my portfolio...if your interested.
