I am totally and utterly shocked at this. I can not believe that a government seeing it's people in such devestating need, would push any kind of help away. Everytime I read something on this I want to scream. My prayers are with those people and with the hearts of the people who are despratley trying to give these people help. I pray that their faith in what they do to help people around the world does not get shattered by the actions of this government. |

I agree with you, but I would also like to add that there are other countries treating their people like this (or worse) on a structural basis (e.g. N Korea, Sudan, Zimbabwe)

This sums it up for me.
Quoted from CNN story - //www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/05/09/myanmar/index.html
"To complicate matters, Myanmar's embassy in Bangkok, Thailand -- where aid groups have been waiting for days for entry permission -- was closed Friday for a holiday."

I think that the US should take that quarter of a billion dollars that they wanted to give to Myanmar and give it to their own people that are sleeping in the streets and searching through dumsters behind McDondalds for scraps of food. I am all for helping people, but if they can't get the help where it is needed, then divert that help to our own soil.

My general stance for us spending money to help other countries is that we should be fixing our own first. IMO this is a completly different situation. When something uncontrollable hits that causes so much turmoil, the countries of the world should get together to help them out and usually do. |
