I have spent the last 3 hours trying to do this shot, i looked at the tutorials here and on Naap sites and others, but I can not seem to find quite what i am looking for.

I am pretty darn sure that it is such a basic question (maybe)

[thumb]675930[/thumb]

I want to get rid of hte background and keep the muslin, man, tree branch. I want to turn teh background pure black.

So what I think i need to do is, select the man, brach etc and paint or layer the background.

I just can not seem to do it, I have tried the magic wand, lasso, eraser, I just do not know how to do it properly.

Can someone save the day for me????

thanks you

Do you know how to use the pen tool? When none of the other selection tools work, the pen tool will always come to the rescue.

If you don't know how to use it, I strongly suggest you learn it. It is an amazing tool!

I'd be happy to help you with it.

I'm just beginning to learn what PS can do, but I would be glad to share how I would go about it.
I would first use the lasso and basically cut big sections out that you dont want, not worrying about the fine detail just yet
you can do it by either using the lasso tool, once you close the circle, right click and select layer by cut, then chose the layer that you dont want and delete it, keep cutting away that way
The other way would be to use the eraser tool and do the same thing, take care of the big sections you dont want first
Once you get rid of the big chunks, then blow up the picture and go slowly around with the magnetic lasso, the trick is to go very slow and let it pick up the edge of what you are trying to cut along, when you get to a point where you are going to change direction or there is not a clear edge for it to determine, try a left click to put down an anchor point and continue drawing your line,
Remember it has to close somehow so you can make a selection, layer by cut and then discard the layer you dont want.

Im sure there might be easier ways to do it then this, but Im just learning and will be checking back to find out some of the other techniques. Hope I could be a bit helpful though

This is a quick edit. Is this what your looking for. The hardest thing is the see-through muslin.

1. Open a "New" document in Photoshop, set the background as black and make it the same dimensions as your original photograph.
2. Open your image in another Photoshop window.
3. Working with your photo do the following.
3.a. Use the quick select tool to select the elements you want to retain (muslin, man, and tree branch). Use the smallest brush size possible without going to small. I used one about half the size of his forearm. If you over-select an area use the - tool at the top.
3.b. Now goto Select > Refine edges. Select "on black" icon about a third of the way down. Now adjust the sliders till you get an even cutout of what you want to retain.
3.c. Now that you have your selection goto Edit > Copy.
4. Change over to the New document you created in step 1 and paste.
5. Refine edges even more, you may have to view at 200% or more.
6. Select the paste layer and create a new layer under the layers pallet. Use overlay and 50% grey. Now dodge the tree branch.
7. The hardest part is making the muslin that the subject is hanging from look like its overlayed on black. Take the white areas and leaves out by using your color selector and select a gray within the muslin.
8. Using the dodge tool, small in size, lightly go over the hanging muslin until the background looks a soft gray while retaining its texture. It's best to do this with a copy layer so you can adjust occupancy or make changes.
9. Once you have everything to your liking, flatten layers.
10. Do whatever editing you wish after that such as color balance, saturation, levels, contrast, sharpen, etc. and you should be done.

Please take in mind that my example was a 5 +/- minute edit and I didn't go into to much detail. You should come out with a lot better version. If you find yourself getting flustered during the process, save as .psd so you can retain your layer and come back later after a cup of coffee or something.

Hope this helps.
Scott.

Control J to duplicate your initial layer, then make sure you're using your brush tool, if not, pick it. Then simply press the letter Q which puts you in quick mask mode. Begin to paint over the area's you want to keep. You'll know it's working cause it paints a bright orangy red color. Make sure your color swatches are black & white when you start this. Once you've painted over the sections you want to keep, switch the top color to white to go over areas you painted on that you don't want and back to black to capture some spots you originally missed. Use the X key to switch back & forth between black & white. Once you have the area covered and you're happy with your selection, hit the letter Q and the marching ants will appear around the area you selected. If you need to reverse the selection, cause sometimes it picks the opposite of what you wanted, then just go up to the menu and under select pick inverse.

Now that you have your selection, you can paint the rest of it black. There's several ways to do that, but the hardest part is picking what you want to keep.

Spend 3 hours getting no where. Spending another 3 hours masking out the background.

Here's some explaination on Selection Tools and Masks.

Or:
You could've spent 15 minutes and $20 worth of broadcloth and just hung a black background from the tree.

Good luck (I hope my link helps).
