Since Microsoft cannot give me an answer, I turn to the talented DPC users. Here is my problem and how do I fix it.
I use MS Office 2000 a lot and last month I decided to download the trial version of MS Office 2007. After seeing if I liked 2007 enough to purchase the upgrade I decided to uninstall MS 2007 and go back to my MS 2000 not convinced the upgrade would be worth the money. I go to uninstall 2007 in the control panel, it starts to uninstall and then pops up a box saying a file is missing and cannot uninstall. It ask me to put in my 2007 CD [don't have because I downloaded the trial] or re-download the trial, then uninstall.
I can download the trial but not install it since it finds 2007 on my computer. I tried reinstalling 2000, nope, that don't work either because it finds 2007 as well. I can't open any existing documents or files associated with MS Office since this problem has occurred. Nor can I create a new document. Basically I have MS 2007 on my computer that I cannot uninstall and if I leave it, it will not work. Just takes up a lot of GB's of my HD, useless, and does not allow me to use my MS 2000.
Anyone here have an answer other than Microsoft's answer to the problem, "Format your Hard Drive" and reinstall".
BTW: Restore point does not fix the problem.
Need help!
Thanks in advance.
Scott

Does it tell you which file is missing? Normally it would be a .dll and most of those you can download from a third party site.

Hi SDW,
Go to the main file that you downloaded, try to extract it to any folder, which will containe the instalation files,
Now try to uninstall once again, and point to this folder when it ask you for those files,
usually it says what files is missing and what is the path to it.
To extract the files from the one you downloaded, try to right click and drag the file to an empty folder, let go of the right click, it will give you a list of what do you want to do, select extract.
If this option doesn't show, then try to download a free trial of WinRar, you can find it at www.download.com, then try once again to extract it, once you managed to extact the instalation files from it, it is matter of pointing to the right directory.
Hope this would help.
Beside that, I think if you gave office 2007 a chance you'll really like it. I am talking technically here and about what you can do with it, try to see some toturials of the new options in it and see.
All the best, |

Whether he likes it and whether he likes it enough to want to pay the upgrade costs are two different questions. The trial version shouldn't hold his computer hostage for the upgrade cost, as it seems to be doing.
Scott: What's the exact text of your error message?

Here is the error message
[thumb]674897[/thumb]
ETA: When I click OK the setup error box closes and MS 2007 is still installed.
Its bad when MS Support don't even know how to solve this issue. Makes me wonder how many others have had this problem.

Scott: If all else fails, try KB928218. If that doesn't work (or perhaps, even if it does, you can always try this.

I ran into a similar catch-22 with another program several years ago. What had happened is that the app had registry entries that told the computer the program was there, so it would not reinstall. It could not find the items to uninstall either, because they were not really there. What I had to do was to go into the windows registry and delete all references to the problematic application. The I was able to reinstall with no trouble. somethign went wrong on the initial install in this case. Just a possibility.
Edited to add: Don't mess with the registry if you don't understand what you are doing. It has the potential to screw up your system if you change the wrong thing.

Thanks for the link, it found over 3300 issues.
I still have to f-disk my computer and reinstall everything. I did something MS said to do and now drivers are locking up in a loop and now they are saying, "OH, it must have damaged your windows XP...try repairing it". That didn't work. After about 15 minutes of my own trouble shooting I managed to get back to my HD and save a few files on an external HD.
So I'll be back as soon as I revamp this computer....."Bobby Boucher, Microsoft is the Devil" |

I don't think I did. I can't look right now, afraid if I go and do to much on this system it will crash again. |

On a related note, Ubuntu 8.04 LTS is out.
I switch to Linux about a year and a half ago. I don't miss the Windows headaches one bit.

Did they (MS) have you run from the command prompt the following:
SFC /scannow
Looks like:
c:\windows\system32\sfc /scannow
This puts the system files back to the way they should be (will require your OS cd if it finds issues)

| Sorry to hear about your troubles. I had the same exact problem. Unfortunately I don't have much patience for crap like this, so what I did was go in and trash the old version of MS and the trial version, then re-loaded my 2003 version (which I like better anyways) When I re-loaded the old version it asked if I wanted to get rid of any other occurences and of course I did. That seemed to get rid of any trace of the trial version. |

| It took me from 11 O'clock till now (over 3-hours) just to reinstall windows, load my motherboard, ati, monitor, and many other drivers. I have not installed any of my software yet. I still have to install photoshop, photomatrix pro, canon software, office, wacom drivers, external HD software, printer cd, linksys home networking, anti-virus, and many others. Not to mention all windows xp and media center updates. I think I will wait till tomorrow to complete. |

Don't keep the secret just because SDW solved his issue a different way.
What if it happens again? Or to someone else? ;oP |

Before making any changes to the system registry, PLEASE do not remove any file that has a odd name, as it could be a system file, if you dont know, ask.
Start>Run...> enter "regedit" and click ok. now the system registry should popup, Under my computer there should be 5 HKEY_* folders, Select HKEY_Local_Machine. From there you are going to want to expand the "Software" folder. If you take a glance at this, every program that has been installed on your computer since its last install of Windows will be accessable through here. Scroll down until you find the "Microsoft" folder. Expand, and once inside search for a folder named "Office". If you want, you can right click and delete the whole folder. or you can open it, and depending on your version it should be listed as 10.0, 9.0, 8.0, and so on... you can remove your specific version if needed. Also, repeat the same process in the HKEY_Current_User folder. Should reset the program. and allow for a reinstall of a earlier version. |
