One of my external hard drives crashed and though i got back all the data from the drive from a data recovery company. many of my picture files have been renamed as 'xmg' instead of 'img'( img_2463 is showing as xmg_2463!)
I am not able to open these files in any software though the file size is the same as the origial files. Can anyone help me sort this out?? |

I hate to ask an obvious question: but can you rename them back to a "2463.img"?
If I rename a file to an unknown type, my computer can't recognize it. Once I change it (the file type) back it works fine.

I did try that by renaming the file as img_2463.jpg as well as 2463.jpg but it still doesn't help. The files open up in MS office picture manager by default with a small red cross icon.

Changing the file name but not the file extension will not affect how it opens. If your .jpg files are opening in an application other than what you expect, you've got a different issue. Try dragging the file onto the workspace of your desired editing application... do you still get an error?
If only the files that have the changed file name will not open, call the data recovery service and see what the change in the file name indicates. They should be able to tell you why the change was made.
Edit: Also, how many of the recovered files have this problem? How many files were recovered in all?

| Could it be that a file is missing that identifies the images? Like in Bridge, it creates a cache file for storing info about the images. What applications have you tried to open the files with? |

The files are getting opened in my default software for jpg files the only problem is that though the software opens- the file don't open. Renaming in any combination is not helping. In all about 2500 images were recovered but this problem is coming only in about 200 or so files, rest are opening fine. |

| OK, if the ones that have the first character of the file name changed are the only ones not opening, then it's time to call the data recovery service and find out why those were renamed, and what it means. I'll bet there is data corruption in those files. |
