I'm not against trying a cavern GTG sometime, but I'd personally like to see us stick with Rickett's (or similar) for this discussion. Caverns are cool (literally and figuratively), but they're not particularly easy to photograph. I visited Luray Caverns in Virginia a couple summers ago, and I thought it was very impressive to see, but photographing it was not an easy task. You don't really have the liberty to go setting up lighting wherever you'd like to, so you're pretty much relying on a strobe and the lighting that the cavern has established (which tends to be very yellow).

Again, I'm not trying to poo-poo the idea, but personally I'd rather do a GTG where it's more conducive to setting up a BBQ and hanging out, and where it's a bit easier to get decent shots.

Of the ones you listed, Penns Cave interests me the most. There are caverns and a wildlife park. But I think the wildlife is only viewable from a bus tour, you can't just walk around. And Woodward Cave doesn't look to be that far from Penns Cave. Plus you would have Penn State main campus and state parks in the area.

I live very close to Lincoln Caverns, but haven't been through it. I'll take a trip over there in the next couple days to check the place out. My wife grew up in this area, and I don't think she finds Lincoln Cavern to be very impressive. Lake Raystown isn't far away and there are a couple state parks in this area.

And I agree with Alan here, the logistics for potentially 15 photographers trying to get shots all at once during a timed guided tour through a cavern would be tough to get right. There would need to be other things of interest in the area.

And there are no waterfalls anywhere near where I live, so I've been looking forward to going back to Rickett's Glen ever since...well, the day after the last GTG. :)

If June 8th is good for a number of folks I would be all for another Ricketts Glen GTG. We can organize another cookout and have as much fun as we did last year. I agree that the caves and caverns would be interesting to shoot but they provide quite a challenge because of the lighting. Perhaps we could start another thread for those who want to shoot the caves??

Me and the Fam were going to go there a few weeks ago but my daughter was bitten by a tick and couldn't be out in the sun. I guess we'll have to see how things go from here.

I agree that this Rickett's Glen trip should remain as is/was.......and I'm looking forward to bringing my grille and doing it again.....especially since I've been in training to make sure I won't die of a heart attack on the trail this year! LOL!!!

I'm 20 minutes or so from Indian Echo Caverns so I could go get any/all info, and perhaps they would be agreeable to a photog party......let me know and we could pursue that in another thread.

I've not been in years; as I remember, it's not very big, but it is pretty.

I was just thinking of how we could change it up a little at Rickett's this trip, I know I didn't make it to the top last year (I know some of you were troopers & made it). We could possibly park a few cars at the bottom of the trails & then start at the top & work our way down? Just a thought, I'm pretty sure there's tables & stuff at the top of the trails where we could picnic & there's Lake Jean right near the top trail too. Just an idea

I think that's a good idea. Park some cars at the parking lots we used last year, so when we've made the trip down, we can drive back to the cars up top. I know that my wife (who has asthma) would appreciate that she wouldn't have to hike back up. And just looking at the map of the park, it seems like there are picnic areas along the lake up top.

Maybe it would be interesting to start up at the lake. I never saw the lake last year.

I think this sounds like a good idea. I never made it to the top last year, either. My only concern is that last year, everyone spread out along the trail by the end of the afternoon and began to leave. If we're going to plan to hike down and ride back, we should try to have some sort of timetable established, so we don't end up all over the place.

I like the idea of starting at the top and working our way down. Brent your idea about trying to co-ordinate things makes sense. Perhaps we could exchange cell #'s so we can all be in touch if we separate. Have we decided a date yet? Let's see if we can get a feeling of who is available when and go from there. The sooner we decide this the better. IMHO of course! :D hehe

June 8 is the day we seem to be aiming for right now. We should probably start a list of attendees somewhere in this thread. I'm sure going to try to be there, and my girlfriend will probably come too.

As for trading cell numbers, it's a good start, but it's also a long trail to get spread out across. I really think that if we're going to coordinate, we need to say that at X time, we're all going to aim to be together for the ride back.

I remember the cell phone reception to be extremely spotty in the park.
