I'm looking into buying either the canon g7 or nikon p5100, but rather the g7 as i have heard not so good things (noise issues) about the nikon p5100.

i have a few old manual flashes i'm currently using with my fuji and also with the wireless cactus set and i'd like to know if there are any compatibility issues with these old flashes when used on the above p&s's?
and i'd also like to know if i can use the hotshoe mounted adapter for studio strobes?

I have the G7.

As long as the trigger voltage is 6V or lower, you should be fine. If it's higher than 6V, use a safe sync and then you'll be fine.

I have successfully used mine with my strobes.

Have fun.

I have a G7 and I've never hated a camera more. I'm sure some people do well with it but I can't seem to take a good picture. Just my opinion but I think it's flawed in many ways....from the inaccuracy of the viewfinder, the noise, the blue/gray cast I get in low light, to the ridiculously slippery grip, no RAW format...etc. A very expensive dissapointment.

I think ALL PnS cameras, even expensive models like the G7 or G9 are disappointing.

The optical VFs on almost all of the PnS cameras are crap.

All of them have noise issues since the manufacturers persist in using the same itty bitty sensors they use in pocket PnS cams.

I haven't seen the blue-grey cast, but I have no reason to doubt you either.

Yes, the grip sucks.

Canon did add RAW capture to the G9 and there are hacks to add it to the G7.

Still, it's the closest thing to what I really want in a pocket camera: A quick, small camera with T, V, M exposure modes, a hot shoe and an APS-C sensor.

hot shoe, well yes, that's one of the reasons i'm looking to buy this camera, as i like to shoot with (off-camera) flash(es).
but aps-c? i thought the new sigma dp1 is the first camera with a aps-c sized sensor, while the G7 has a usual 1/1,7" sensor...?

anyway, could one of you guys do me a favor and mount an old manual (non-digital) flash on the G7 and tell me if it worked or not? ;)

Sigma dp1 sounds like a very cool camera. A good friend just mentioned it last week. If it reviews well I'll sell my G7 and pick one up.

there was a review including laboratory tests in a german photo magazine this month.
the results say, the 5MP dp1's resolution is on the level of a good 8MP p&s,
noise level was best ever tested on a p&s (no noticable noise @iso100, almost no increase @400), even better than on fuji's f20/30 and very good dynamic range (9 apertures @iso100, 8 apertures @iso400)+very nice color rendering, wide angle lens.

downsides: very slow AF, jpg's were almost unusable due to bad noise and jpg artefacts, thatswhy they used only raw files for the test, raw's take very long to be written on the card, lens is a fixed 28mm f4, very pricey (800€ here in germany).

so i'd recommend to wait for sigma to fix the jpg and speed issues, than get the follower model.
