Hello,
Have a vid cam that records in mpeg4. When working with imported files in Premiere Elements 3.0.2 I get "jerky" playback from the timeline. This happens on two different computers. One with XP one with Vista.

When viewing the raw mpeg4 files on Quicktime or Windows player they play perfect.

In premiere I have to "render" the timeline in order for the vid to play smooth. I usually render at the end of my editing....I'd hate to have to render my files before editing b/c I usually cut tons out before render. RENDER TAKES TIME! I really don't want to do it on the "front end".

Any Ideas?

Rendering is what you need. If you don't then each frame is being rendered on the fly and depending on the speed of your computer may need time to catch up.

Also, once a video is rendered once, only the frames that are changed will be be re-rendered when edited. Of course, with a video file this probably means the entire thing.

I thought it may boil down to computer speed but....how come I can play the "raw" mpeg4 file in quicktime with no jerky motion at all?

Is the jerky preview something to do how Premiere handles the file?

In order for Premiere Elements to show the video it has to convert it to it's internal format before playing. If you don't do the rendering to start with it has to do it on the fly. At least that's how I understand it.

I had the same issue creating a slideshow from still images. Once I rendered the issue went away and portions were re-rendered when I changed them.

It just bugs me that I can "play" the file on quicktime or windows media and it plays fine but to play it in Premiere is a hassle !
