My husband got back from being in Salt Lake City over the winter. He was there as a contractor changing out electric meters and the Salt Lake City DPCers were awesome with helping us with questions about the city. I'm hoping some of you Georgians out there might help us now as he is on his way there now doing contract work with the water company. He'll be there for up to a year and a half and I'll be visiting as much as my job allows and taking lots of pictures :).

So if any of you have a minute we'd love some info pertaining to things like:

Photo opportunities... I tend to lean towards landscapes, birds (aviaries?), and events.

night spots... affordable places to eat, drink, and listen to live music.

and, more urgently, a place for him to live... affordable apartment complexes, rooms for rent, in a friendly location. He may live by himself or bunk with 2 of his buddies, whichever ends up cheapest.

ericwoo and elemess are the Downtown Gurus and may post here soon.

I will post that some good photo ops for you may be:

Callaway Gardens
Berry College
Centennial Olympic Park is good for night shots.
Oakland Cemetery (should reopen soon. Needs clean up from tornado damage)

If you do google searched on any of these their websites will pop right up.

I am sure there are more and will post later as it is late. Do you know exactly what city he will be working in?

Edit to add: A few of us DGrin/SMugmug users already have a GTG planned for Berry College on May 10th. If you are anyone else will be in town then you are more than welcome to join us. Just pm me and I will send you the details.

Hey Cynthia,
I will be glad to add some specifics as soon as a get a free minute, but HERE is an earlier thread that was aimed at Atlanta as well. As far as 'affordable' places to eat and drink, Atlanta isn't so well known for affordable. There is the Clermont, where cans of beer are $3 or so, but it is also the place where strippers go to die on stage. Interesting to say the least. Again, I'll add some details when I get a minute.

He and his fellow contractors have been hired by the water company to change out all of the water meters in Atlanta. He'll be all over the place, but is looking for a place close to the water company near, but not in downtown. He's in a motel right now, but they all seem so outrageous. Any ideas for apartments?

Here is an extended stay hotel link for Atlanta along with a map and prices. Hope this helps.

Berry is nice -- with those herds of deer just wandering around.

Careful with Callaway though. They had/have a policy whereby no photos taken there can be published in any way shape or form. Very annoying.

Stone Mountain Park, east of Atlanta is good.
If he/you both can get away for a weekend, about 1.5 hours out of Atlanta to the North East is Tallulah Falls, Toccoa Falls, and more mountainous green areas. Very nice and great photo opps there for birds and running water. About an hour south of Atlanta is Monroe Co. where we have High Falls -- not that high, more wide, but still very cool.

As James suggested, Googling will produce some more details. You might also look up Bond Swamp on the eastern edge of Bibb Co. Again, about two hours away from downtown.

Oh yeah, and for "events", the annual weirdo gathering called The Renaissance Faire is going on. About 45 mins south of Atlanta. :)
