I'm sure all of you know and have experienced the difficulty of finding a job in the field of photography. I'm currently in the middle of the process.
I'm looking for a photography-related job. Any type of photography. Any country.
Unfortunately, I've run out of ideas on where to look. I've applied to more jobs than I can count (including those found in the "Assignment Desk" thread). I've sent letters to companies that I'd like to work for that aren't currently advertising open positions. And despite sending out almost a hundred applications, I've gotten only one reply (and that one wanted me to work for minimum of one year without pay, which I can't financially do because I have four years worth of student loans to pay back).
Another problem I've encountered is that since I'm a newbie to the field, I don't have any inside contacts.
So here's where I was hoping you all might be able to help me.
If you or anyone you may know is looking for a new photographer, a photographer's assistant, or something similar, please let me know so I can get in contact with them.
Any help you may be able to offer me would be greatly appreciated.
You can see some examples of my work here and you can see my resume here.
Thank you in advance,
Stefanie Giglio
(Edited to fix link.)

I'm not a photography expert, but the first thing that jumps out at me is that your website is not very friendly for potential employers, not to mention typical web surfers. The first screen is a classic example of 'mystery meat' navigation which is notorius for frustrating people. Instead of getting people where they want to go fast it creates a puzzle for them to solve, which is not what you want for most web pages particularly if you are listing the site on your resume.
There is far too much area on that first graphic that does not link to anything (we have to guess which countries you've shot in) and most people would probably prefer seeing your portfolio by subject matter rather than being forced to choose a location at the outset. The location map might be a nice extra, but not a starting point. Also, your links should include text, and if you don't want text, at least put 'alt' text descriptions so a mouse hovering over a link displays what the link is for.
In the galleries I would recommend getting rid of the rollover method of selecting pictures to view and just let people click on the thumbs. It's very frustrating for many people (like me) to have the website change images just from moving the cursor a little bit. The format you're using now makes it so that only the pictures on the ouside of the thumbnails can be left on the screen if someone wants to move the curser off of the menu (say to write a note about how great one of the inner pictures is that won't stay on the screen when you move the cursor to write about it).
Web page design is an art with 'rules' akin to the rules of photography that should only be broken if you know what you're doing. If you want to get familiar with some basics this is a fun/informative website that can help in avoiding the worst mistakes:

Good luck with the job hunt. |

Thank you, but that's the Assignment Desk thread I said I've already looked through (I check it almost every day).

Thank you for responding. I'm in the process of re-doing my site using Lightbox. It's not going as quickly as I'd hoped. I'll be sure to keep your suggestions in mind! |
