i know its still early, but i am getting slaughtered in the Grace challenge, and i think it comes down to the title i used. people are telling me they think it is a great photo, but that they don't see what it has to do with grace.
i literally got this one in at the last minute, since when i submitted it and the page refreshed the entry deadline was closed and voting had started! is it possible for me to retitle this piece somehow - i think it would make a big difference.
cheers,

In my opinion a good title can enhance a photo, but if the title is necessary to explain the photo I have failed. |

dang.
thanks for the advice. i kind of think the image speaks for itself, but i guess i'm wrong. the current title could be misleading though. maybe no title at all would have worked better.

I really thought we'd be spared the 'challenge definition' pedants on this one, as the subject seemed so open ... just goes to show - you can't underestimate the voters :-0

After getting the shot the next difficult thing is the "title" then the cropping or framing.

Hi Darcy,
I think a lot of pictures have been given names at the last minute. My "grace" entry is the same + no time for a good post processing. So at least, you're not all alone...

Darcy: Don't be so anxious about the title. Actually I examine the photo, and if it has a really-really good title, maybe I give a plus point for it if I hesitate between 2 scales. But if you have a terrible title, I won't take points off from you. Just my wow feeling won't be full, which is only a problem if I could also give a 10, not only a 9. |

I am getting slaughtered with the title I wanted (something I don't always care about) so I guess it's not an issue of title but of image and that's as it should be. |

Don't think a bad title ,good title, no title should matter. I bet a lot of people don't even read it.

I have voted in two members challenges now. I place my vote score in the comments box, as a respect to the photographer. A title has yet to influence my scoring. I typically do not even look at them. |

In conclusion, it's not the title what makes the shot. :-) |

I think that's the case with mine. |

So am I not the only one who gets lower scores than I thought it could be? |

i guess my concern is that the three comments i've received each questioned the "grace" aspect of my image yet complimented the image as it is. i admit that i may have used a little artistic license, but i thought that was the idea. "grace" is a pretty broad topic, so i'm surprised to see these three comments questioning it in my image. if the image is just bad then i can see me being in the sub-3 scoring bracket, but compared to my last entry i think this image is much better and that scored nearly a 4 - poor, but deservedly so. maybe some more comments will come in to help me shed some light on this... |

I think my Grace submission is my favorite of anything I have done. I was sure everyone would have to love it.. lol.. just goes to show we all have different tastes. I'm at 4.5. You know the feeling of wanting to get the message to people.. "just look at it! How can you NOT love it?!"
I've had no comments in 63 votes so don't know what people don't like yet.
But, even though its barely edited outside the camera, its another artsy looking photo and we know how that goes. I love it with or without the scores. Thats what counts right?

I'm in the same position as you fayepek.
My Grace phot is my favorite photo I have taken, but it is not doing as well as some others I have done (although it is doing better than most I have done).
I have no problem with the votes, they are doubtless quite fair, I am just finding that it is not seen as being as generally good as I hoped it was.
I am wondering if it is simply that I have an emotional attachment to the photo and thus have convinced myself it is better than it really is.

I am with many of you. The photo I submitted is one of my favorite and it is doing poorly.
I have got at least a few good comments. I like the constructive criticism but am disappointed.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. I feel my grace shot is my personal best, a LOT better than my "All Alone" for sure. I'm sitting at a mid 3 when my other one received a 4.7, and really, I didn't try very hard oon the last one either. I really don't understand though why the score haven't reflected this. What's even more crazy is that I got slammed for theme appropriateness on my last one and still did alright (for my first entry) and I truly feel that I fit the theme extremely well this time around, I put most of my energies into making sure this time. Really, I didn't think it was that bad of a shot. I don't know, maybe this is a little too early to tell still, or myabe there are some things I need to learn. Please, enlighten me. |

Fay, Nat...I'm also in the same boat. Personally think my Grace entry is the best one I've entered. It has a slightly humorous spin on the theme, but...oh, well. We'll see how it pans out, but it seem strange that my best entry is scoring below my lowest rated entry (Alone, which was diserved). |

i'm slowly creeping up to 3!
2.9710 with 69 votes... i can still make it!!!
to be clear, i am in this for the fun and for the learning. i'm new here, and new to photography, so i fully expect to rank low at this time, and if i always rank low then i guess i'll always be trying harder.
but oh how i'd love to taste that 3!

Darcy ....
I've been active here a couple of months or so now. When I started I was scoring very low indeed, and was a little disappointed. As I've got more experience I've looked at my earlier entries and gone "Wow, no wonder they scored so low!" They were in the 3's.
Now I usually manage to score in the 5's. I love the work I do now. I have little doubt that in 6 months I'll look at it and go "Wow, no wonder they only ever got 5's!". At least I hope I will, as it will mean I have progressed further and learned more :)
I have had one photo squeeze into a 6, just squeeze in. It was an amazing feeling :) Didn;t come in the top of the challenge, but the feeling was great, even if it was just something personal for me :)
Half the fun here is learning and improving, and I am sure you'll do great and in no time be so far off a 3, on the right side, that you'll never look back :)
