Does anyone have either of these lenses, and any views on them?

I can't decide whether I should get a zoom or a prime? I would like the functionality of the zoom to replace my 18mm-55mm kit lens (and get the VR), but I keep hearing so much about primes, should I be moving around my subjects more rather than zooming in and out?

Bear in mind I'm new to photography, do primes make you learn a better technique?

I would really consider getting either the Tamron or Sigma 2.8 18-50mm lenses. They are really well built, good fast glass, and are quite a bit better than the fit lens you want to replace.

Regarding primes versus zooms - I personally love prime lenses, but for running around and shooting, I carry my 18-200mmVR lens for most things.

The quality of the 85 is worlds better. I don't own either but I've used both at camera stores. The 85 is razor sharp, and very fast. I'm actually considering it at my next lens as well. Your problem will probably be with the focus, though-- it won't autofocus on your D40 because it isn't AF-S, unfortunately.

As for the 16-85, I'd say skip it and go with the 18-200. You get way more versatility, and the wide end difference can be corrected with all of probably 2 steps backwards. If the 16-85 were worlds sharper, then maybe it would be OK to choose it over the 18-200, but it isn't.

Not sure I agree with the thoughts of Anti-Martyr cocerning the 16-85. I have the 18-200 and have a love hate relation with it. As a matter of fact I sold it once and then later purchased it again from a fellow DPC'er. I'm now thinking of dumping it again and going with the 16-85. It is a much more pratical range and is bound to be better just based on the fact that it is only 5.3x vs over 11x. Anytime you try and stretch the range of a lens you make compromises. Take a look at the comments at B&H:

As for the 85 it is a great portrait lens but likely would not serve your needs as well. If you want to try your first prime go with the Nikon 50mm 1.8, it is only $110 or so but highly rated for its sharpness.

Good luck with your search.
