I found this PDF and thought it contained a pretty good exercise for learning just what, exactly, Photoshop's Shadow/Highlight Adjustment is really doing.

I did find one error. Where he is having you create a 64-step gradient, he tells you to click Image | Mode | Posterize. That should be Image | Adjustments | Posterize. Everything else is very well done.
