So I tried a tutorial to make custom photoshop paintbrushes. I took watered down black paint and spattered it across paper a bunch of times and scanned them in. Then I thought "Well, what now?"
So... I came up with a process for painting a photo and it is still definitely in the experimental phase. I'm look for comments and critiques of this and maybe ways to better resolve things like my eyes and lips.
here is the image:

Re the results so far: It's visually very exciting. Lots to see. I like the different colors and how the colors work in relation to those of the original portrait.
I feel that the composition (having the face looking off frame) and the absence of anything else leaves a picture that feels like it's missing a bit of context. For me, I am always drawn to pictures that have a feeling of incompletion, so that's part of what really appeals to me. However for many others, it might need a place to be. It looks like something that would go very well on the cover of an interesting novel. Even a quality matte/frame would be enough.
I'm not sure exactly what the question is though. Are you looking for opinions on the brushes themselves that you have created or the results?
As to the lack of detail in the face, I think you are right that it needs a tiny bit more detail, but I'd not worry too much about it, from the style of the rest of the pic, with the drastic and powerful 'brush' work, it does work very nicely to have a little bit left for the mind's eye to fill in.

That's an interesting effect. Have you tried applying it as partially transparent layers? |

Yeah I don't really know what the question is either! Moreso opinions on the results, and maybe where to go from here... I like your ideas, and I don't think I would ever set the person anywhere yet (but your idea makes me think of trying a landscape in this style), I more see it as a portraiture painting. The canvas maybe should have been longer on the right though...

Well, I have messed with it a bit, but the brushes themselves are pretty transparent... for the darker areas I give the brush about three to five clicks to darken it in. Also after I've laid down a color, I'll select that layer, make another layer and then paint other colors on top--kinda a mixed watercolor look when i do that. |

A very impressive work. I'm not sure how you achieved it (I'm guessing brushes applied in different modes) so I'm only guessing when I say you might bring back some of the detail in the lips by masking and changing the blending mode. I really like the eyes the way they and wouldn't change anything. Keep experimenting, you will turn out some great art. |
