So I know this may come as a suprise but I'm just not feeling very satisfied with my canon xti kit lense! :)

Anyways I don't have money to just toss around at lenses until I find the right one so I thought I'd ask your opinion based on what I want. I shoot mainly outdoor portraits but I am starting to do some indoor studio/open window shots

1. On the kit lense there is almost ALWAYS a strange red pink line beteen subjects and the background is it called CA i think? not diggin that

2. Feels Cheap.... Like I'm going to break it.

3. Lacks sharpness.

I have been looking at a couple lenses and can't decide between them.

EF 50mm f/1.4 USM $320
EF 70-200mm f/4.0L USM $520
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM $1200

For the prices I could get but the top two for less than just the bottom What are your thoughts?

Two more lenses you may want to compare to: EF 70-200mm f/4.0 IS, about $1.000 and the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 IS, about $1.700.

If cost is an issue, I'd also consider the EF 50mm f/1.8, which is outstanding glass, very low cost, although lightly (plastic-) built.

To determine the defect you describe, it would be best to post an image here that exhibits it.

the top 2 are both very very nice lenses. If I had to choose between the top 2 or the bottom 1, I would most definitely get the top 2...The 50mm is very versatile and very sharp and one of my fav lenses.

The 70-200 f/4 is also a very nice zoom.

Cost is only kind of an issue. the 2.8 IS is awesome but a little more than I wanted to spend right now as this is my first lense purchase. I got my old 75-300 as a gift.

That redish outline is not really that noticable unless you zoom in but I am concerned that if I ever blew up a print it would become noticable. It's not every picture though... just kind of random really... it's fringing now that I think about what its called.

You will not need IS, if you use a tripod, which would be good practice for portraits anyhow, particular if taken indoors. The 70-200s can deliver a beautiful bouquet and are great lenses all around, but, if you're shooting indoors, I'd choose the faster (f/2.8) of the two and scrap the IS.

I would probably go with the top two. You would have very large aperture lens for low light shooting in the 50 1.4 and then you would have the 70-200 f/4 which is probably the best bang for buck in the canon lens arsenal, well built, super sharp and ultra fast on the focus. If you decide later you needs dictate that you get the 70-200 f2.8 IS version you can sell the f/4 version for pretty close to what you paid for it new. I had mine for two years and it sold for $450 on craigslist. Trevor~

Thanks for all your help guys! I think I have made up my mind as far as what I want. I'm gonna get the top two. I am not really a fan of the IS feature because I use a tripod anyways. I would like the 2.8 but like you said trev I can upgrade later when I'm ready. The 50mm would be great for those low light situations as well as being sharp as a tack so that I might actually ribbon! :) You sharpness hounds you!

once I get those then I'll look into a fisheye and a macro.... but that'll be another day and another post..

Once again thanks so much for all your help guys!
