i'm having a hard time finding any software to process an mpg file on my pc.
the original format was a .MOD so i just renamed the file tag into MPG but movie maker does still not read or open the file, so i want to convert the MPG into MOV so that i can process the video in photoshop cs3 which definately reads MOV files.
or are there any other video formats that photoshop is able to work with? or any cs3 plug-ins that allow photoshop to work with MPG or MOD files?
any help is greatly appriciated!!! |

MPEG Streamclip works great. You cannot simply change a file extension to make things work; there is much more going on than that.
Edit to add link and text.

Perhaps you're just using the wrong conversion. Try one of the different export methods (AVI, MPEG-4, etc.).
How big is your MOD file? Is it too big to send to me and I'll do it for you?

I don't know. I installed it a long time ago to convert files from my camcorder. I'm on a Mac, which might explain some differences.

another free converter to try?
It says if you can play the video in Windows Media Player, then this software can convert it. I have never tried it so can't say how well it works. |

well thanks it did work and i did'nt even have to pay for the mpeg2 plugin i had to install additionally.
the file (.MOV) is quite small now, it's size was reduzed from originally 730mb down to 78mb...
now another question:
i did some curves and hue/sat adjusts in cs3 on the video and now i want to make it a time laps video by speeding up the frames. is there a tool in photoshop that does this job or do i have to use yet another program?

Adobe After Effects will convert MPG to MOV files.
I haven't come across .MOD format before. |

from wiki:
"It is the video file format used on many digital camcorders, such as the JVC Everio, and the Panasonic D-Snap SD-card camcorders. Typically, such files are actually MPEG-2 video files with a different extension. To play such .mod files, it is not necessary to convert them but in most cases simply rename their extension to .mpg. Widescreen .mod files may need their aspect ratio flag fixed."
honestly i have never heard of that extension either until i saw it on the borrowed sony camcorder.
anyways, the conversion works now, but there's still the problem how i can get the video speeded up (in photoshop?)...:( |

well first of all, renaming the extension isn't going to do much.
i would try a nice utility called MediaCoder which is free and can transcode just about anything.
also would be advisable to install a good codec pack such as K-Lite. |

Glad that software worked for you. I don't have CS3 though so can't answer your second question. Giving it a bump so that those who are more knowledgable on CS3 might be able to advise you on it! |

I assume you're using CS3 extended, since you've already adjusted video with curves.
Try looking at some "Doctor" Russell Brown tutorials on CS3 extended and video. I'm sure there will be something about adjusting keyframes to change the "speed".
Edit: This or this or this might help.

here's another one:
i now want to synchronize a video and a soundtrack. the problem is that the video also has sound which i want to get rid of in order to not have two soundtracks playing at the same time. i just can't figur out how to get rif of the video's soundtrack.
so if anyone out there knows where in photoshop cs3 i can find the adjustment to disable or strip off the sound of a single video then please let me know!
or should a use a seperate (free) program that does the job?

When you save out the file from Photoshop, see if there's an option to strip out audio (i.e. save the video only). However, even if this works, I'm not sure how easy it will be to put the new audio track in using Photoshop (I'm not sure it was designed for that). I use FCP for video editing, and you might want to try a demo of that (if you're on a Mac) or Premiere Pro.
