This idea sounds like fun, however it will just be just a popularity contest. |

not if the entries are anonymous like the regular challenges, so you are voting on the photo and NOT the photographer ;)

Ya, I understand. It just doesn't work that way in reality. Call me skeptical but I think that it would still be a popularity contest. |

This is exactly why we need to have this challenge! |

SC,
Maybe we could have a poll to see how much interest it would generate? |

What a fabulous idea - love it!
Is SC listening? Poll would be good. |

Why does the SC need to be involved at all? Just like the DPC Olympics, someone (OP?) could take it on as their project.
Now, a poll could help with determining how many want to participate and how many just want to watch. It won\'t tell you who though.

This wouldn't be difficult at all. No poll needed, no SC needed...
I don't know how "idolish" it would be, but just use the weekly open challenges. Have a "signup" thread - the first 100 to opt in are the players.
After the first week results are in the top 50 continue into week #2, 25 into week #3, 10 into week #4, etc... (like the OP listed). The catch is that the contestants wouldn't know if they advanced to the next round until after rollover, so you'd have to enter the next week just in case.
Really, this would be similar to the various tournaments that go on here on the side once in awhile.
Hardest part would be having someone setup the tracking of contestants and scores. |

I think you make some great points. I'd be willing to track the results and keep it organized. How long do you think it would take to get 100 individuals to sign-up?
I'd also be more inclined to use the weekly member challenges because there is only one of them each week. There are two open challenges and choosing one over another may cause some grief.

6-8 hours for 100 people sign-up...maybe 12. :-)

Weekly member challenges only would exclude registered members. Having a choice would be easier for most anyway (topic selection, etc...). It's score driven anyway if you're tracking all participants. Shouldn't matter what challenge they participate in. |

How are you going to ensure that it is anonymous! look at the comments on the brilliant winning picture of negative image! Most people knew whose it was!
Personally I feel that contests like this skew the voting for everyone not just the entrants. look at all the open results since the Dp olympics even most of the winning averages appear lower. |
