Just a little celebration. These are my first shots with the new 40d. As it turns out, I have since since sent it back to Canon - but we should be reunited in 10 or so business days.

Really nice shots Bernard. I'm looking at getting a 40D as a backup/second camera to my 5D for weddings and the like. Can I ask why it's gone back to Canon? I've heard a few reports of them needing to go back for calibration, is this normal?

Looks good. I'm curious, also. I am wanting to get a new camera...looks like this one would be my only choice as far as what I want to spend.

can I ask how it compares to the rebel series? I have the opportunity to upgrade my 400d for a 40d before I go away but i'm not certain either way yet.

Congrats on the new camera! Why did you send it back to Canon?

I just got a 40D last week. I was surprised how much improved it felt and sounded over the 20D. Besides the crisper images it seems to produce, it just all around feels better when shooting.

Thanks for the good will.

I sent it back to Canon because I think that there is a chance that the sensor chamber or sensor or high pass filter are in some way behaving other than how they should. I dunno, maybe there is an electromagnetic issue. The sensor was FILTHY and I could not get it clean. I never had any problem cleaning my rebel. Nothing I did made a bit of (positive) difference. So I sent it to Canon. They will at least clean it for me, but I am asking them to really consider the possible of some sort of problem. I shoot a lot of stopped-down shots and cannot have a sensor that refuses to be cleaned.

how much improved it felt and sounded
Yea, it does feel and sound quite nice. I would never have thought it would matter much to me... but it was a welcomed find.

how it compares to the rebel series
I was really quite fond of my rebel - I thought it a wonderful camera. I decided to go with the 40d instead of the new 450d because....see this thread
But actual performance comparisons....will take some time to determine. I shot with it for a total of two days.

i upgraded to a 40D from my 350D two months ago - and I love, love, love, LOVE it!

I recently bought a 40D as a backup body for weddings and it arrived the day before I was going to Spain for 2 weeks holiday.

I only had a quick chance to play with it before I went but all seemed fine and so I left the 5D at home so I could get a chance to get used to the 40D all holiday

Well the first time I changed the lens to my Sigma 10-20mm (first lens change i did on the camera after fitting my 24-70 f2.8 L to test it) none of the "Creative Settings" would work. If I left it on the fully auto or any other auto settings then it worked fine but as soon as I got to "P" up to "C3" it wouldn't work at all, not even the menu worked!!

After some investigation I think the DOF Preview was jammed on in these settings for some reason? I could hear the aperture changing as I scrolled through in Av mode and the viewfinder was getting lighter/darker as it would with DOF Preview on.

I was really annoyed but decided to continue using it in auto modes (JPEG only of course :0( ) and then after about 20 shots or so it started working again in the Creative modes!! This then continued occasionally after switching off or changing lenses?!?!?

It now appears to be working fine all the time in all modes but I thought i'd ask if anyone else has experienced a jammed DOF Preview on the 40D (or any Canon camera)

Seems to be a really nice camera though, very pleased with it when it's working and the Custom modes are great as a HDR mode for bracketing as well.

+1 here. I was able to pull of shots in a dark church (baby's baptism) that I would have had no chance getting with my 350D (without a LOT of flash). Noise was low at 1600ISO. And the 6.5 fps! Shot some pictures of my dogs playing in the yard, and scrolling through it looked like a movie.

The controls take some getting used to over the Rebel series (thumb wheel and joystick). I kept jumping 10 images in the playback mode b/c I was used to using the index wheel on my Rebel. Only thing I need now is an angle finder or eyepiece extender to keep my nose/cheeck off the LCD panel.

I would also recommend the grid lined focusing screen. It helps a lot to compose things level and reminds you of ~8x10 crops. I have accidentally framed too close for an 8x10 in the past and had to duplicate grass and sky in photoshop.
