I just went to Photographer Profiles and worked backwards from page 2322 to 2304 before I found this right at the top of the page (30 photogs to the page) as the first one who'd actually entered a challenge. OK, I didn't check every single one, but at random on those that had cameras.
Me, I dived straight in with an entry the minute I joined. Fools rush in?
(I still like it)

And folks say I have too much time on my hands. ;-)
I joined 10-30-2004, got an email about a speed challenge two days later and sumbitted my first entry that day and been stuck here ever since. Mostly I lurk now though. Lurkers are at least a notch or two above trolls I think.
As for rushing in - I don't understand the apprehension at all - it costs nothing (extra) to submit, the worst you get is criticism from people you have never, and probably may never meet. What risk?? |

I signed up in 04-2004 and submitted my first challenge 04-2006. The fear of failure is strong in this one ObieOne.
Still have only entered 46 challenges in 2 years (4 years total).
I dove into the competition with this:

I've been more of a lurker since I joined in 2002, however, now that I'm unemployed I'm trying to be a little more active! Just entered the negative image challenge. |

Well, there's something to be said about lurking and learning what the site is all about. I entered the shot below on the day I joined just as a joke and now I wish I could get it out of my profile. It was a bad outtake from my first water drop pictures that just happened to shoehorn the challenge in a way I found funny...

Joined on June 20, 2006 and submitted that day. My learning started with that very first entry.

That's a pretty good pic, I wonder if you have tried to sell the water on ebay? Make sure it's the same water though, I hear those ebayers are real sticklers for stuff like that... ;)

In order to get this shot right, you would have to be very fast and have a good working knowledge of your camera.
was the informative and kind comment left by toocool on my first entry on 12/14/03:
He was right you know.
I registered and became a member on 11/24/03. So that makes around a three week lurking period. Actually, I did a lot of looking and voting during that time, to get a feel for the site. So I guess I'm not one of those who think a "waiting period" for voting should be necessary. |

Well, considering that I am one of those "lurkers" you guys are talking about, I figured I should respond to this. I literally stumbled onto this web site a couple weeks ago. I am a portrait photographer but unfortunately in a company where I don't get to use my own camera. I am in the process of buying my own, so the one next to my name is my baby I keep stopping by to see at the local camera shop until my tax return comes back! I was completely impressed by everyone's photography that I am dying to join in, but my mediocre point and shoot I have at the moment would be an embarrassment! So I hope I don't make too many people mad at me as I continue to lurk and enjoy until I can join in the fun! |

I joined at approximately 10 PM on Sunday, April 6, 2002, and entered my very first challenge within 30 minutes if I remember correctly. Would have entered the picture sooner, but I had to take it, first.
Rollover was at 1am Eastern, in those days.

Oh, man, I hope we never go back to that. As it is, I have too much time to edit and re-edit and re-edit and re-edit and re-edit and re-edit and re-edit. I submitted my 8th version of my shot tonight, which was a reshoot of a shot from yesterday.

I entered this;
on the day I joined.
But I'd visited the site before that, after seeing xianart talk about it on her blog. I was too scared to even join right away but it didn't take long!
I think that a few have joined thinking it was somewhere to toss in their snaps, then after having a good look realised they were out of their depth and weren't interested in going farther than snaps.
Others just want to learn and to heck with competing, which is fine too :) |

I registered April 2, 2007, I think the day I found this site. I lurked for about 3 weeks and entered my first shot using a camcorder April 22 after doing lots of looking and commenting and trying to get an idea what people on this site like. When I figure that out I'll let you know. I got a good camera late May and keep getting more accessories to help me take better pictures, though I can't say my average score is rising very fast.
(edit to fix typo)

It took me 8 days to enter. It was an awful entry but its like riding a bike. Sometimes you wipe out once in awhile...especially in the beginning. But you get back on a start pedalling again.
