I was hired by a friends parents for a big family portrait. 6 adults so I was kinda nervous. But the shots turned out great!!! I just heard back from them yesterday and they want to order $500 worth of prints!!!!! They love the shots and I get to make some cash!!! I'm soooo excited! :)

Here is the best of the bunch. They ordered a 16x20 of it. Please feel free to critique or offer up any advice.

I'll go out on a limb and ask why the space on the bench? and why so much grass/burnt grass/sprinkler heads, post (nearly out of someone's head) and the garbage can? ie. why all that space around the subjects? and why the angle up high?

I Havent been on in a while but thought I would chime in here as well.

I agree with frisca you have way to much extra unused space. I dont mind the angle I have to use the same thing in some family shots I do simply because I am shorter tha some of the subjects(note Im 6ft tall) but you usually don't do the shot quite at that angle. Basicaly with this pose you would be a bit better off using a Portrait(vertical) orientation instead of landscape.

Next little nitpicky thing is moms hands seem a bit akward, having her lay one on top the other open but relaxed would have been helped make them look less gangly

That aside good job and congrats on the sale! (if you think Im being picky I should point you to a customer I had last week she thought the picture of her 18mth son was cute but didnt want it because the zipper on hs jacket wasnt perfectly straight up and down because it shifted when he sat down and for some reason that bothered her)

My brother taught me a lot about portrait photography when he was in that business.
This is just an amateur opinion, but fill flash looks strong, overpowering the nice low angle sunlight, and taking out almost all shadow in the faces. I also agree about the crop could be a lot tighter, and also the hand. The hand positions are something that pro portrait photogs learn to watch for, and it does make a difference in how the images are accepted by viewers and buyers.
Congrats on your sale, and if the customers are happy, then it's a big success.

Thanks for the tips guys. Well the reason for the landscape orientation is, that is how they wanted me to shoot it. I took some portrait oriented shots and they didn't order many prints of that type at all. And as far as the mom's hands, she has MS so that might be part of the reason they look a little off. I might "clone" out the black pole in the back and the trash can. Thanks again!

Ahh ok if they wanted it Landscape then did you do any Poses that were more oriented toward landscape? You had that whole bench to work with there and could have put Mom/Dad in the middle then like the Boys to either side of them and have the daughters posed infront of the bench covering legs/hands would look pretty neat if you could have the girls sitting right in front of mom/dad back to back and hands on their Knees.
