I need a laptop but I don't much money for one. I just need it for my post processing work, internet, downloading and playing music. Should I look at eBay or Craigslist or something?

What's your budget?
For all your listed uses except one, a very basic machine would do well. For post-processing work, however, an inexpensive laptop is really not appropriate. The displays on inexpensive laptops are terrible for photo editing. Specifically, they have severe gamma shift with viewing angle, making it difficult or impossible to judge whether the output is acceptable.

would a desktop do? a better desktop can be had for less money, and the advantage is you can upgrade components as you have the budget.

I got my HP with Vista, Pentium etc all-inclusive, for Internet use only, as a refurbished via Future Shop for $500 some Cdn, with 3-yr warranty about $700.

I just got an email from Dell .. they have a Vostro 1500 Laptop, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor, XP Home or Vista Home basic, 2GB Memory, CD/DVD burner, 128MG NVIDIA graphics card and 80GB hard drive (upgrade to 120GB for an additional $25 or 160GB for an additional $75). They are calling it a 2 day sale but I've seen them last longer. Total price without the hard drive upgrade is $499 with free shipping. Let me know if you need the link to the laptop and I will PM it to you.

As would i. When i build the system to these specs, it comes out to almost $900, so that's a great deal.

Thanks for the responses! That Dell deal sounds awesome but I won't have the money to get one for another couple weeks. Ill check out those refurbished deals though.

I'm a big fan of craigslist personally! I got an $1100 sony laptop last spring for $800. Maybe I was just lucky but I really like it. I'm pretty sure you could find more deals closer to your price range on there, if your willing to take the time to look.
