Ok, another Sunday, another loss for my Steelers. I'm beginning to wonder if I am indeed the a jinx. It was a crappy day in terms of the loss, and in terms of the weather. It rained steadily the entire game, which meant I had to maneuver the camera while it was encased with my sophisticated rain protection device (a ziplock bag). Here is a sampling:

It isn't you Alan really you aren't the jinx. Steelers got to excited about a Ford Limited edition the Steeler F-150 and forgot how to play football.

Awesome shots Alan!! Too bad about your team though. :( I think my team (the Raiders) is doing worse then yours this year! With Romanowski out for the season and Gannon out for who knows how long, we've been getting the heck kicked out of us!! Better luck next weekend!! :)

These are AWESOME!

You may have talked about this in another thread, but I have to ask. Are you shooting from the sidelines of the field? If so, How did you score that deal? If not, where are you in the stadium that you can get such GREAT shots?

Great action shots! What kind of lens are you using?
Who do you know to get those tickets? :)

Your football photos are always awesome, but you still need to expand your horizons! I don't care how you do it, but get some cheerleader photos! I think that's why the Steelers have been sucking....they have built themselves an equation for disaster....

no cheerleaders plus guys in yellow tights = suck. heheheh

Yes, I am on the field during the games -- I had posted a Sports Photography 101 Tutorial last year when I first began shooting the games -- I address the lens questions and "how'd you get so close" questions there :)

And Lykofos, I have indeed been attempting to gain support for the Steelers to get a cheerleading squad, but nothing yet. I am hoping to shoot a couple away games in a few weeks. It doesn't look like Cleveland has cheerleaders, either, so that's a bummer. BUT it does look like the Baltimore Ravens have a squad! The bad news is that the Steelers won't play in Baltimore until the end of December, so by then the cheerleaders will probably be wearing non-erotic parkas or something...

Maybe you can get them to wear the erotic parkas instead.

I learned that many of the pros prefer the 2-gallon Hefty Ziplock Storage bags (seriously). I felt a little inferior since I only had a 1-gallon size.

so, how do you avoid glare off the bag when its over the lense?

I poked a hole in the bottom of the bag, so the lens is actually sticking through the bag. I was mostly concerned about keeping the body of the camera dry. The tough thing was keeping the lens wiped off -- I have several foggy-looking shots thanks to water droplets. It was an overall miserable experience. My hair is just beginning to recover :)

Can you take a small piece of clear film or acetate and tape it arched over the top of the lens like a hood? Or use one of those sun hoods.

If I wasn't so lazy I probably could construct something. The tricky thing is that virtually the entire lens is going to rotate at one point or another (the furthest portion rotates as it focuses; the closest end to the camera moves while zooming).

Roll the film into a semi-rigid transparent cylinder (or open-topped cone), just slightly larger than your lens barrel. Tape the (smaller) end into the hole in the bag. My hope is that you can work the lens-based controls through the bag just behind the junction, while having the front element pointing out that covered tube. If you're in bright light, you could use black film as a hood.

I may give that a try if the situation presents itself again. Fortunately it's extremely rare that we have a day where it just rains and rains constantly all day like it did yesterday. Hopefully we won't run into that again! I'd actually prefer snow, which also sucks.
