Hello everyone.

Can anyone help on why this would have happened to a friends star trail photograph? The top corners have gone purple!

Thanks in advance.

The sensor heats up during long exposures, turning parts of the edges purple.

In other words, it's normal. The exact location, number, and severity of the purple spots depends on the camera.

On my star trails shot, which coincidentally was also taken in Vermont, I fixed it in editing. Mostly, anyway. If you look in the lower right corner, you'll see that there's a slight change in color - that's what's left after basic editing. You can also see a similar blotch along the top edge just to the left of center:

Could it be a Nikon thing? I've never seen that happen with my Canon(s).

Ive done some 45-60 minute exposures with my d-200 and didn't have any problem with purple corners.

Did you use long exposure noise reduction, where it takes a blank image of the same duration immediately after?

At any rate, this is a well-established phenonmenon. Plenty of results in Google.

For those longer exposures I usually have the noise reduction turned on. I shut it off if the exposure is less than 10 minutes.
