I'm looking to do some engagement photos to get a feel for the style and to begin using them as a promotional piece. I have a couple who is interested in doing the photos. I'm curious as to what is a typical package(s) deal that you would offer typical couple getting engagement photos. (note although I am not charging this couple and am doing this as an exchang a price and photo option would be great to hear from other photographers as I will be offering this couple a package for free.) |

there are two types - the 'headshot' type - basically a studio sitting with a 5x7 for the newspaper and perhaps a few for their desks at work, etc. I do this with every wedding package as it allows me to work with them a bit so they'll not be complete strangers on the wedding day, they'll be more relaxed, etc, so the wedding pics are better and they're more cooperative.
About half the couple purchase a signature frame (11x14 print in a large mat, framed) for display at the reception for the guests to sign.
The other session is usually 2 to 3 hours on location(s). Kind of a date where you tag along and shoot them. About the only way to 'sell' this is to include a coffee table book or album of the shoot. Do some portraits, some kissy shots, shots of them holding hands, the engagement ring, etc.
In 3 years of doing weddings I've only sold this type of package one time. I'd say 70% of brides book their wedding in jan-mar for this year so there is little time for such a session. I try harder to sell it to '09 brides as they have all this summer, often including their wedding date (but a year early), fall colors, etc. Late day into sunset works well, so make sure you have a location for sunset shots!
The one session I did they used the pics for a guest book at the reception see it here

I've done the "in studio" setting once... and all the rest of my engagement shots have been on-location. I much prefer the on-location shots as it gives me a chance to get to know the couple better ... who they are, what they are like when they are together. Plus, it's just a lot of fun. :-)

I plan on doing a location shot. The idea is to basically follow them on a date and let them have as close to natural interaction as possible.
I'm actually more concerned with how many photographs and what sizes you give them. The actual book itself is probably a good idea and that is something i will make sure i do, but how many photos do you fill it with? |

I've settled on 2 sizes, as in image count. I do a 30 and a 60 image coffee table 9x12 book, the actual page count varies based on my artistic layout of the images. If you shoot in drive mode and get a series of 6 images say, you'll want a 2 page spread perhaps of all the images in row. But on another page you may want a full page image.
An extra page in a coffee table book (hard cover, paper pages) is like $2 or something. Since I charge $243/$386 for the book (my time to design it is in there) I don't quibble over the cost of a few extra pages. That includes a full photo cover (my cost on the 60 image book is around $50). Their 'cost' for 60 imag4es in a book is a tad over $6 per - cheap on a per image basis so that makes it easier to sell. And they'll usually get all the good images that way.
As for prints - my wedding packages include a number of gift prints (8x10, 2 5x7, 4 4x5, sheet of wallets) - they can use the prints anyway they want, for the eng session or after the wedding, for themselves or parents, etc. I do include a free 5x7 for the newspaper announcement.
