anyone know of a web site which explain what each filter does.

Assuming you mean lens filters, this site is very detailed, and the information looks excellent. //www.bythom.com/filters.htm.

If you want less detail, this site seems to have decent descriptions (even if their grammar and spelling aren't perfect): //groups.msn.com/AAAPhotographyCommunity/filters.msnw.

The local photo club I belong to had a presentation on filters at our last meeting. I posted the article on our website.
