For posterity:

I had a Maxtor OneTouch III (external hard drive). It was partially (but not fully) backed up. I had it disconnected from my main system and was traveling with it and the laptop. While traveling, I connected it to a power source without surge protection. And it got burnt. I didn’t panic though – I assumed that the external casing circuitry was damaged, but that the drive within would be fine. I was wrong. When I removed it from the casing, I could see toasted resistors on the PCB (the circuit board on the hard drive). I found a matching PCB on the web and simply replaced it. All data recovered. Here is what you will needâ€Â¦.

A star torch wrench size T8
A donor PCB – either from a purchased drive, or the circuit board itself. To be sure that it will work you will need to match:
The drive make and model and size
The PCB model number (printed on the PCB itself)
The chip number of the controller (it will be the largest chip on the board)
The chip number of the motor chip (one of the smaller chips).

Note that such a service runs about $700-1,500.
