Fifty years ago... so the latter 1950s? I wonder what it is about American society, culture and politics in that era that you consider "Christian" or Christ-like. Are you aware of the vicious racism that was unmasking itself to the entire country at that time? If you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend the award-winning documentary "Eyes on the Prize" that documents how very un-Christ-like American whites, particularly southern whites, were behaving at the time toward their black brothers and sisters.
Let's see now... in the name of anti-Communism, the American government in 1953 overthrew the democratically elected government in Iran and imposed a dictator; and then in 1954 overthrew a democratic government in Guatemala and installed a military dictator; and then, of course, in 1956 the American government blocked free elections in Vietnam, divided the country into North and South, installed a dictator in South Vietnam, and the rest is history with which you should be familiar.
And I haven't even mentioned the domestic anti-Communist witch hunts (in the form of McCarthyism) that were just beginning to wind down around that same time period.
So what is it exactly about the latter 1950s' American society that you associate with Christian values? |

Allright, maybe I got a little carried away with my righteous indignation.

1. The USA is a Christian Nation founded by Christians. It's laws are based on Christian morals and values. All Christians believe in the freedom of religion and are tolerant of all belief systems in so far as they do not violate the laws of this country. You have a perfect right to do as you please. You have that right because it is a Christian nation founded by Christians.
2. I don't appreciate you denigrating my (and I'm sure many others here at DPC) beliefs by referring to what is obviously supposed to be a Christian symbol of the suffering of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ as a cell phone tower.
3. I would defend your right to make these statements no matter how completely innacurate or plain offensive they are.
Have a nice day! |

1. Yes, I agree with you, to an extent. Fifty years ago, I would have called America a Christian country. To me, a Christian country is one that would be predominantly Christian and would support a Christian worldview. It would also be a country whose citizens act Christ-like, whether they adhere to a Judea-Christian set of beliefs or not. To call ourselves a Christian nation, is in my opinion, naive, and a touch self-righteous. Our nation, as a whole, does not act Christ-like. We do not deserve to be called a Christian nation because we do not act like Christ.
2. Calm down. I wasn't denigrating anything. You've not been here long, so you obviously don't know my stance on things that are Christian. You can start by reading my profile. Next, you can do a bit of research. Within 50 miles of my house there are at least two cell phone towers that churches/religious institutions have allowed to be erected on their property. Guess what shape they are? And from what I understand, unless it has changed, this is true across the country. The picture linked to looks almost exactly like one of the towers near here. Thus, my statement "It looks like a cell phone tower."
3. Thank you for your defense. However, it is not necessary in my case because my statements were neither inaccurate or offensive. To say either is to not be looking at the evidence and to be carrying your religion on your sleeve. If that statement, made by a Christian offends you, I strongly recommend that you never get between some of the crossfire in the rant forum with scalvert/achoo/matthew, etc. |
I already have been on the science and theology thread. Check out my posts if you like. I wasn't so much offended really by your statement as I was just a little aggressive in wanting to put my point of view out their. When i reread the post I can see that I went a little overboard. No hard feelings?
