I've only joined a few challenges, but it's just weird for me that when I submitted entries that for me were just mediocre, I got relatively higher scores than the entries I was quite satisfied with.
Wow. Has anyone noticed the same thing happen to them? |

With only three entries, (one DQ'ed) I don't really think you've given it enough time for your hopes and dreams to be crushed ;) |

LOL. Touche. It was just an initial observation. When I expected to get relatively low, I got higher than when I expected to get relatively high. =p
That DQ was a pity though. I really should check my mail more often. |

Definitely, both in challenges and in my portfolio :)
I think part of it might be the emotional attachment with some of our shots.
A hypothetical example;
I go on holidays with the family. We have a wonderful time, and one night part of the perfectness is a gorgeous sunset. I absolutely love the shot, both because it's pretty and because it encapsulates the great memories of the days, and I want to share that.
Sadly, it scores 5.5... mostly because to voters it's a pretty sunset, which we've seen lots of here. They have no other connection with it like I have.
A reverse example from my portfolio;
On vacation to New Zealand we visited the Winter Gardens. The greenhouse flowers were absolutely overwhelming in their beauty. That shot was a quicky of a flower outside. To me it was nothing special compared with what else I saw that day, so I was astounded with the response here.... 7 favourites!
Beyond simple differences in taste, I don't think we can ever view our photos totally dispassionately, as viewers do. Not to say our shots may not evoke emotion in viewers, just that they probably won't mesh completely with ours.
Of course I may be totally offbase, but this is my guess :)

You are offbase, but I agree with your comments. :P

You need to take zeuszen's workshop on Enhanced Mediocrity - or like the other response: give it more time before you become disillusioned, angry, beligerent and flee the site. It's a process and you can't skip the steps. |

Lol, thanks Art... I think! I guess that's why I like you so well? ;)
I didn't get the impression that the OP was necessarily "disillusioned, angry, beligerent", just totally baffled, as I have often been. (Then again, I AM blonde and senile, so that's normal for me...)

No, I know he wasn't. Like I said - It's a process and you can't skip the steps. ;-)
Edit: He's in the "Hi guys, I'm new here" phase. ...although he looks to be a lurker for a number of years. Or an early deserter. :)

Wow, you're fast!
Sigh.. I just wish the steps were fewer and easier. |
