I am trying to figure out the easiest way to trigger a flash that is on a stand with a softbox.
That being said I don't yet own a flash (I borrow one occasionally), a stand (uhh, that too), or a softbox (I am going to get one)..:)
Using IR, I am thinking will be a problem. Radiopoppers aren't being released in Canada yet, and I would still have to buy the Canon IR...
PW's cost a fair bit and from what I understand I would lose E-TTL (I plan on getting a 580ex). IS there a cheap, reliable way to go?
softbox would be this one: //www.vistek.ca/store/ProPhotoLightingSoftboxes/227790/lastolite-ezybox-hot-shoe-38cm-x-38cm-15-x-15.aspx

As well, has anyone bought or used Lightrein strobes? Am considering them, along with the DPC stand-by Alien Bees.

When shooting flashes, I use shoot-through umbrellas instead of softboxes. For two reasons: 1) the umbrellas are infinitely more portable than a softbox and I'm usually "on location" when shooting flashes versus "in studio" when shooting strobes, and 2) given that the umbrellas are open and a ways away from the flash, I can easily rotate the body of the flash towards the master while keeping the head of the flash pointing into the umbrella. And that solves the problem of having the slave see the master.

I was thinking that outside I might run into trouble with an umbrella...I plan to use one, but liked the portable softbox, figuring it added another dimension. Think it might not be worth it?

The only e-ttl choices you have is stuff made by Canon, or the RadioPoppers. There are the cheap ebay triggers as well, although you get what you pay for. These are manual only, very limited range, and not very reliable, but they are a heck of a lot cheaper than anything else around right now. I have the ebay triggers, and I'm glad I have them rather than nothing (or wired).

I use umbrellas... softboxes are just too much of a pain to carry around. The smaller they are, the closer you have to put them to your subject in order to get soft light. So the only truly portable soft boxes aren't too much fun to work with anyway. (ummm... that's *my* opinion)
